How much of an infant circumcision increase are we REALLY going to see in the US?

Sure, this WHO thing has been getting a lot of press, as did the African studies last year, but the circumcision and HIV prevention literature has been around for about 20 years and had already crept into medical association circumcision information pamphlets before now.

I get the strong feeling that most people who did not circumcise their sons feel it isn't their place to make that decision and that STD prevention plays no role when you are talking about a newborn.

Really, what does this change? There will be someone "on the fence" who will fall onto the wrong side and misinterpret the HIV studies as justifying infant circumcision, but aren't most people who are going to be swayed by it the same people who would have been swayed anyway?

Am I the only one who expects a small bump in the trend but not a dramatic one?

If the AAP and/or the Canadian Pediatric Society change their stance on circ, it will result in a huge increase in RIC.

I think the concern is that these new recommendations may soon be echoed by medical organizations like the APA, AAP, CPS, etc. (oops, saying pretty much the same thing here as the above poster)

I give the AAP changing their policy over this a 25% probability.
I think overall the intact trend will continue, although more slowly.

I see the big lose not in it swaying parents per se, but in it swaying those who have influence over parents. I'm talking about Drs, nurses, medicaid, insurance companies, baby magazines, etc.

Exactly. It's also being thrown at people on mainstream forums a lot now too as the new prime reason to circ. *vomits*

I also wonder what effect the WHO statement will have on reimbursement in countries with national health care. Wil they then pay for adults circs for heterosexual who are looking for some extra protection? Will they start paying for newborn circs again? Especially since its cheaper than adult?

Yup, way cheaper when you don't have to worry about all that pesky anaesthetic and post-op pain meds.

Is anyone really paying attention to this?

I was disturbed when I saw the post on the UN recommendaions, but honestly, I haven't seen anything about it on the news - cable, local, it's not a headline anywhere - even online you had to look for it on Weds. I honestly don't think the media is giving this much attention for now - too much else going on. My DH said "people are seeing the new Harry Potter book on the news - they're not thnking about the UN rec's!". I hope not...:

No, but generally in the US, the default is circ. If people question that at all, they go look for research and finding the UN recs is going to hurt. I have friends who were leaning against circ because they didn't see much medical benefit and now are leaning for it because it might lessen the chance of AIDS. A lot of people are buying into the 'hype' on this...heck, I had a ped tell me I had done a diservice to my ds because I hadn't circ'd him and now he was at higher risk for AIDS.

I think it's going to hurt the intact cause badly. And the only comfort I can draw from it is that in 20 years or whatever when these studies are proved complete bunk, any sons I have will still have their foreskins. I just wish more boys would be able to say the same.

It was in my local newspaper.

I saw this in the newspaper the other day -- in the middle of the A section. Arg, it makes me mad. But if people are ignoring the WHO recommendations for advertising formula and how long to breastfeed, maybe they'll ignore this, too.

Sigh.

Um, I don't agree. Those are things people have been taught to formula feeed and nurse for 6 months and longer is "yuck" so I think they will actually umm listen on this? Unfortuantely, but that's my idea.
