Argh! Can't possibly be true, but...

Different forum, non-natural birther, two questions as a result of that conversation...

1. Is there really a genuine medical reason that a woman shouldn't walk around dilated to 4 if she's not in labor?
When I questioned that statement, she wouldn't say what her experience had actually been or what reason the doctor had given.

2. Why would a doctor induce a mom if he examined her at "7 months" and found they'd been wrong and she was full term? Would they actually think that if she was full term but the charts said 7 months that she'd go another two months just to complete the charts? :

Plently of women walk around very well dilated for weeks, there is no reason for her not to, besides maybe she doesn't want to...People think "oh, I'm 4 cm dilated, I should be in labor already".

I don't even know what to say to the other situation...I can't think a doctor would inducs a women who they even considered was only 7 months along.

Ugh. I hear quacking.

For situation #1, the thinking is that if someone is 4 cms and not in labor, that her labor "might" be fast and she should be induced so the baby can come under "controlled" circumstances. (To which I say, there are worse things in life than a fast labor....)

The other sounds fishy. Even if the "7 months" is wrong, and she really is full term, why not just let labor happen?

That was the only thing my doctor-mom could come up with too. Ie: We can't possibly let you "risk" having the baby outside of the hospital! :

The second situation I thought was too weird. The woman was saying it's important to have internal checks frequently during pregnancy and her friend was "so glad she was checked because she ended up with a full term baby when she thought she was 7 months".

Both of those sound pretty ridiculous to me. I knew a woman pregnant with twins who was 9 cm for the last week or 2, or maybe even longer.

#1 was the reason my mom was induced with my brother : She was dilated to 4 but not in labor and the doc told her they needed to induce right away because if she left and went into labor on her own, she wouldn't make it to the hospital in time :

I have a friend who was induced at 38 weeks because she was 4-5 cm dilated......but her case was probably very different than most: they induced her because her first labour was only 2 hours long and her baby this time was so low that her head was litterally on her cervix!! (it was actually kinda funny: she could barely walk because - as she said: "i have a watermelon between my legs"!!lol)- so they induced her because they were concerned that the baby was SO low and she was already SO dialated, that she might only have two contractions before the baby was born!!
(BTW- the doctor broke her water and her daughter WAS born 25 minutes later....4 contractions!!! )

as for the second question: that's completely idiotic!! I can't believe that a mom could be so dumb as to believe a Doctor that idiotic!!!

People walk around at 4cms for weeks sometimes! I did have one friend who was induced at 39 weeks b/c she was walking around at 8 cm, but that is a whole different ball game than 4!

As for the second thing, that's ridiculous! If she was found to be full term, wouldn't you just expect the birth to be happening sometime soon instead of 2 months from now?

Well, the only thing I can think of for the 7 months/full term thing is that possibly this is someone who was very very unsure of her dates from the beginning? And maybe didn't have much in the way of prenatal care so there was no measuring of the fundus or anything like that...

That could explain the confusion on how far along she is, sure, but it doesn't offer any reason to induce

I mean, if she were full term, then labor would just naturally be imminent anyway, right?

No real reasons that I know of not to walk around 4 cm dilated... I was at 4 cm for nearly a week, and 6 cm for two days before we decided to break my water (none of the other natural inductions were working, I was well past 42 weeks, and I lived over an hour from the birth center and didn't want to go to the local hospital if things came very quickly... even for being stitched up!)

But if I'd been able to stay nearby for a few days, I probably would have given my body more time to do things on its own. In other words, logistics might make it more worthwhile, especially if the mama is overdue anyway, but I don't think there's a medical reason.

But now that I live much closer to my birth center, I have every hope of making it to 8 cm before going into labor next time! :

My sister had some weird hip thing happen to her when she was about 37 weeks. She ended up in the hospital for about 5 days, and when she left, she was already starting to dilate.

At her 38 wk appointment, she was 3 cm.

At her 39 wk appointment, she was 5 cm.

At 40 wks, she was still 5 cm.

She went into labour at 40 wks 4 days, and gave birth to her daughter 8 hours later, at 40 wks 5 days.

What a SUPER labour! She wanted an epidural, but had she been planning a NCB, I think she would have had it made! She called us on the phone at 3 am, decided to go the hospital around 5 am, and gave birth before 8 am! Not too bad for a FTM! lol

As for the second one, well, all I can say is "duh!"
