Have not received W2 - Independent Contractor

Dh was an independent contractor last year and stopped working there about six months back. He has not received his W2 from her yet. We have emailed her and called her. This is not like her and I suspect she may be ill. (she lives in another state) What do we do now? Is there any other way to get a W2 through the IRS or something?

Thanks

Does he know what he made through her? You can include it on the tax forms without actually attaching a W-2. If he doesn't know for sure, I think I'd estimate and then file an amendment later if necessary.

At any rate, definitely call the IRS and see what they have to say.

my understanding is that independent contractors do not get w2's , as they don't have taxes withheld. If your hubby made over 600 last year, then he should have gotten a 1099 form in the mail, but no W2. Have you all been keeping track of all of his earnings?

I knew it wasn't a W2 but I couldn't remember what it was. Thank you. No, he did not get the 1099. We have it all in our bank account statements but I'll have to order them. I was hoping not to have to. I didn't realize that they only kept six months online. Ooops! She was so good last year with getting us the form that I wasn't worried. I shouldn't worry since its dh's work but he "forgot" with his new job. Grrrrr!

Thanks!

Yes, call the IRS number, they'll tell you what you need to do.

Call the IRS. One year, I had worked for a company and they never mailed me a W2. I called the IRS, spoke with a friendly rep, and they totally took care of it. I received a W2 in the mail a few weeks later. For all the crap the IRS gets, I've not yet had a bad experience with them. Now, ask me again after we get audited.

I was an independent contractor for several years before finally being hired by the company where I was working. They never sent me anything and I found out that they are not required to (laws may have changed since then... this was 10 -15 years ago). They were required to report it to the IRS. I was required to report it to the IRS, but no paperwork (1099) was required to exchange hands... that was just a courtesy if they wanted. I kept detailed billing records that I could use in the case of an audit, all of my check receipts, etc. She may have just decided to not extend the courtesy of sending a 1099 this year.

Finally, if he is an independent contractor, he should be paying quarterly estimated taxes. What have you been using to pay your estimated taxes? I'd just use that information/receipts to pay your final taxes.

We have never been required to pay quarterly taxes. We always "pay" when we do our taxes (I was working and took a higher deduction amount). I did finally get a copy of all his deposits from our bank statements. I will also call the IRS about it. Thankfully, we won't be doing this again. Thanks for all the help!

Quarterly taxes are recommended for some but not necessarily required.
