***Warning - stillbirth due to severe pre-e mentioned in article.***

Ms. Hanson- Parry had developed severe preeclampsia, a condition caused by an abnormal placenta. She underwent placental screening for two subsequent pregnancies. In both cases the results were normal.

I thought the cause of pre-e was officially "unknown." Is it known that pre-e is caused by an abnormal placenta? I haven't heard this explanation before.

I had moderately elevated bp w/dd. It didn't turn into pre-e and I didn't need meds or anything. But b/c I had a bp issue, I'm always interested in this. FWIW, my placenta came out whole, and my doctor said it looked great - really healthy.

Thanks for weighing in. I think I'm going to assume it's just a poorly written/researched article.

I know really know, but I had pre-e and Anneke had a very small placenta and IUGR. I think there must be some correlation, but I don't know what causes what.

An abnormally functioning placenta does not cause preeclampsia exactly, but it is involved in the underlying physiological dysfunction of the syndrome. The placenta appears to be at the heart of the disorder and this has been well established and accpeted for some time. While signs of preeclampsia often do not show up until late in pregnancy, preeclampsia appears to begins with implantation and involves abnormal placental implantation into the uterus.
