menstral like cramping?

so I had a dr appt yesterday and he did an internal and said I was a fingertip to 1cm dialated
first question- does dialation mean I'm efaced too? He didnt say
and I had lots of cramping like a period and 5hrs later when I went to bathroom I had dark brown blood and dark brown mucus, called dr and he said it was because of internal
had a little more brown discharge this morning then none, the last few hours I have been very crampy but no real tightening of uterus that I can tell but I am so crampy and have lower back pain too, could I be contracting? that sounds so stupid
ETA: super crampy and just went to bathroom and have more brown discharge and dark brown mucus

the brown mucous sounds promising to me! i'm dying for something like that over here i had some cramping yesterday, too, but cramping and contractions, at least in my experience, are different. cramping, for me, is this sort of ongoing ache (sometimes accompanies by backache), and contractions have a beginning, middle and end and have the belly tightening aspect to them. not that i don't think the cramping has an effect, too! i think it does. was it a rough internal exam? that could be causing your discharge and cramping; or if he swept your membranes.

good luck! keep us posted!

No, dialation doesn't mean effacement (but it could) My mw said I was starting to get "soft" and efface, and I was about 2 cm. It happens at the same time. Also she warned me that I may feel crampy after exams. It does sound like you lost your plug though!!! I did this morning too (no blood though)!!! Just think, you are 1/10th of the way there. LOL!

if your doc is gentel, there should be no cramping after an exam. I would be very leary of anyone putting their hands in there and doing something like stripping your membranes or sweeping your membranes with out your permission.

Was there a reason for the internal exam??

ANyway, to answer your question, it sounds like labor is gonna be very soon!

Sounds to me like you're starting labor. Dialation is the opening of the cervix, and effacement is the softening of the cervix...two different things. Just because you're dialated doesn't mean you are at all effaced....but you could be at the moment!
