Did you know?

I'm super poster this week.

But that's not the "did you know".

I looked up oxytocin in dh's pocket handbook for something or other--printed for physicians about perscription drugs of various kinds.

The very first thing written under "oxytocin (Pitocin)" is:
WARNING: Not approved for use in elective inductions, although widely used.

I wonder how many doctors tell their patients that?:

Wow! I did not know that! I bet most drs don't either!

Does that include pitocin? Is it listed there also? I have my nursing drug book, I should look it up there too and see what it says....

Yes, I knew that.

Yup, I knew that. Neither is Cytotec and the FDA has a warning about it.

It also says it may affect breastfeeding and there are links with jaundice. That doesn't ever roll off anyone's tongue that I have heard.

Yeah, I knew that too - too bad I didn't know it when I needed to know it!

I think the key word there would be 'elective'.

We all know that women are induced at alarming rates today. But they are *necessary*...ya know, because of [insert some reason, any reason will do].

I'd venture to guess if you asked the average OB about their rates of 'elective' induction, they'd give you an incredibly low number, maybe even zero. There always seems to be a 'reason'.

Sadly, it seems to make some women then question VALID reasons as well, as it's hard to know when to trust advice that seems to be motivated by so many other factors in so many women.

Sheesh! It figures.

My SIL was just induced b/c she was 3cm and no labor. They were worried that she might go into labor anytime! (gasps of horror). I guess they though she was just going to drop the baby out while walking around. Hmmm. Would that really be so bad? Gotta wonder about some ppl. LOL.

I was 3cm a week before I gave birth. I'm surpised they would see that as anything abnormal. You'd think even an OB would be smarter than that.

My husband joked: "Some people are so insensitive to the needs of the rich! Don't you know how difficult it can be to get a good tee-time at the golf course!"

I'm sorry I have no idea. The title of dh's handbook is "Tarascon pocket Pharmacopoeia".

I'm pretty sure you can find it on the manufacturer's website. I want to say it's Merck but I can't remember. Try google.
