Cold Cereal vs Soy Beverage

My DH generally eats cold, organic cereal with soy beverage for breakfast during his work week. I'd like to discuss some other options with him, but need to know which to tackle first - the soy or the cereal!

So, from a poor nutrition/phytate standpoint, which is worse, the cereal or the soy?

I understand that neither are processed properly to lower the phytates. The grains the cereal is made from are probably rancid and then extruded, further damaging them. The soy is also highly processed.

See my dilemma? What do you think?

Personally I think I'd go for the soy milk first but only because it seems worse to me, I don't know for sure that it is. That being said, maybe the best way to go about it is to pick the one you think he's most likely to give up.

I can't get my DH to give up his cereal either. We both work so its quick and easy. I'm fine with a slice of sourdough toast with Kerrygold butter for breakfast but he wants his cereal. If I were to get up earlier than I already do and make him eggs or something more NT friendly, he'd eat that instead of cereal but that's hard to do most mornings. Although I think I will start making more of an effort. Ask your DH for some ideas on other breakfast foods he'd eat. Soy milk is high in sugar and contains phytoestrogens. Both things will make a person "fluffy" . My DH is very self conscience of his waist line so that makes it easy for me to at least get him to avoid soy and sugar. One type of cereal that I tolerate is Cascadian Farms Granola cereals. It doesn't have flakes. Will your DH settle for almond or rice milk instead of soy? I'm assuming that raw milk for him is out of the question??

I think it just takes time to convert DH's that don't really do any reading or researching on their own. I give my DH lots of info in email and in person but alot of times it takes someone else he knows telling him the exact same stuff for him to believe it and embrace it. : It bothers me sometimes but it is a great joy when DH finally does come around and sees things the NT way.

Yes, for now raw milk is a no go - over time maybe! I like your ideas on other cereal options (perhaps I can just make him some homemade granola too) and the tips about soy so perhaps we'll try that first.

I am still learning a lot about TF and the in-depth aspects of nutrition, so sometimes I'm not able to coherently discuss some of the issues with "food" that DH likes.

thanks to you both for your suggestions!

I would agree with the soy beverage being the first that I'd tackle. I guess for me, my main concerns would be:

*phytoestrogens - There was a time not all that long ago when I wasn't really all that concerned about them, but with my PCOS diagnosis and the research I've done there it really is more of a concern. We've got enough "endocrine modulating" compounds in our environment (both man-made and naturally occurring) that we encounter on a daily basis without complicating matters by purposely ingesting them.

*phytates - You're right in that the commercial stuff hasn't been properly prepared in order to counteract these. There are some ways in which you *might* be able to get around this by making your own at home, but then there are still other issues.

Plus, not only would your dh be ingesting the soy beverage, but then if he is consuming any other packaged goods (like the cereal) there is also likely soy found in that as well. So what starts off as just a soy beverage could end up being much more than that when you consider the overall "soy load" in his diet.

Personally...if I didn't have access to raw milk then I'd probably go for any milk I could get that was both organic and grassfed (even if it were pasturized).

Although...with the cereal it might be the easiest to conquer. There are lots of traditional foods friendly cereal recipes out there including granola. If he's amicable to the switch then maybe that just might be the place to start.
