Hi all, im new to NT and just got my first lot of Raw milk... the first jar was yummy but the other 3 have the onion taste. How do you all deal with that?...do you just get used to it or what...

(the babies will drink kefir made with it but my almost 6 year old dd almost vomits when she tries it)

TIA for any thoughts...

That reminds me of an OT story my dad tells that his dad told. My grandfather was older when he had my dad and grew up during the turn of the century in rural Alabama. He tells the story of during church, a toddler nursing sits up and loudly says for all to hear, "Daddy, Mama's been eatin' onions again!"

Regarding cows milk, I have never tasted "onions" but occasionally it tastes like I imagine a wet cow smells, and that's kind of ick--but, I do get used to it--and we end up doctoring it more (I drink more lattes, we do more kefir smoothies with lots of yummy fruit and sweeteners, I bake more, etc...).

our milk has never had an off taste...but I hear you can often taste what the cow has been eating ( as in garlic etc)...

sorry, no help here

That would be a pretty hard thing to get used to IMO. Do you know they farmer? I would ask if the cows have been eating onions or something similar. The only time that our raw milk has tasted off was one month this winter when they were eating a different kind of grass. It wasn't really "off" but it wasn't as sweet. I did notice a wet cow kind of after taste the first time I ever had raw milk but I don't notice it anymore. Hopefully for you the onion taste is just a temporary thing and the farmer can get rid of whatever the cows are eating that's causing it. Another thought I just had is to make sure there's nothing in your refrigerator or kitchen that could be causing the onion taste. Milk absorbs odors/flavors very easily if the container is left open next to anything with a strong smell.

The cow might possibly be eating onions.

Milk takes on the flavor what whatever the cows been eating if its strong.

My dad said they would have to bring their cow in and let her be in a small stall for an hour before milking to allow the onions she eaten to dissipate.

have you seen napoleon dynamite (recall the part where he is tasting different batches of milk)? Great movie if you haven't yet. Yes, there are wild alliums out there on the field I bet.

Thanks mamas

... yes, I love napoleon dynamite.

Its not the fridge making it taste like that. Definitely in the milk.
ok so I'll have to ask the farmer if it usually tastes like this from their cows or if its just a *passing* onion/garlic munch.

we're making curry sauce with some tonight...also making sour cream (I could add some chives to it too) and whey...
