can you make "prefolds" or flats with any fabric? (soft of course) I'm just curious because I have a ton of cotton cloth kind of like jersey and I was wondering I could make some dipes out of it

I haven't tried this, but here are directions for making prefolds. For some reason the page didn't seem to be working when I just went there, but hopefully it will for you.

You can make it out of any fabric, but some fabric is impossible to pin and/or snappi. I made some wonderful 100% cotton interlock PFs but once they got wet they were impossible to pull the pins out of. Plus they were hard to pin even when dry and impossible to snappi. I like my pins to slip in like butter.

My favorite things to make PFs out of are sherpa and/or velour. For sherpa you can make 2-3-2 so you don't need so much fabric and they will be really trim, stretchy so they fit FOREVER, and absorb quite a bit.

Ain't no project easier than a flat diaper Just cut a giant square and hem or serge or zig-zag all around. I like hemp, birsdeye, and flannel.

I just made flats out of flannel, love em

I made some using a whole bunch of different fabrics and the ones I liked the most were with a french terry outer, regular terry middle, and flannel inner. These seem to be pretty trim, and soft, and you can get all the fabric at joanns.

I am trying to make flats.. how are you hemming them? I just have a regular sewing machine, but my flannel flats are coming out horrid.. (I guess I can't sew) and I had a horrible time with teh corners.. any special tips for sewing around the corners on a square flat?

I finished one, but I'm not happy with it but at least it will do the job.. unless it frays in the washer.
Also, what size do you start off with when making flats? does flannnel shrink a lot?

TIA.

making prefolds

I am currently in the process of making my first prefold. I am using some old T-shirts that were just laying around and adding a little bit of filler in between the folded layers in the middle. HOPEFULLY they will turn out fine and work well.
I am using the directions from this site http://fernandfaerie.com/sewing_prefolds.html and I cut my squares out 18 inches like it said. If you have a smaller baby and need a smaller size you can always make the squares to size. It might be a little trial and error at first until you get the right size. Or you can fold the diaper to the size you need.
