I did it

I cancelled the cable today! We really just don't need to spend $56 dollars a month on tv. Hopefully, we will watch less too!

Good job, mama!!!!
We haven't had cable for about 5 years and we really don't miss it! We watch about 8-12 movies or so a month from Blockbuster online and we have rabbit ears for Fox and CBS (PBS doesn't come in very well... boo!) and lots of videos for DD.... We really watch very little TV so it's nice! We keep saying we want to get cable for the educational proramming (YEAH RIGHT! LOL Like that's what we'd watch!) but we never do

I've adjusted to being without cable, it's been about 2 years now with the rabbit ears.

However, I'll admit I am very tempted to get basic again, I have cable internet, adding basic cable would only add $3 a month to that bill.... I'd then get Discovery channel and a few more, but Discovery channel is one of those channels I actually really miss.

Good luck to the adjustment, it's not that horrible after all.

I wish my DH was on board with doing this...

Congrats! We haven't had cable for several years (when we were first married, it was included in our rent) and though we miss Discovery, we spend so much more time doing other things! We're also excited that more and more companies are offering shows online.

Plus, the over $300/year savings (for us) helps. People think we're nuts for not having cable, though.

I grew up watching whatever channels we could get with an antenna. Total of 4 or 5. Since I moved to the 'city', we have to have cable to be able to watch tv. We can't get any channels without it. I'm hoping that when we buy a house in the country, we'll go cable free too.

Congratulations!

That's awesome! My mother lives with us and TV is her LIFE. If we canceled cable, she'd probably come at us with a kitchen knife.

I see the image of a crazed woman in a robe clicking through empty fuzz channels

CityChic-- Dh was NOT estatic, but he's the one who keeps telling me that we don't quite have enough $ to cover everything each month. It's taken a few months before he finally has given in. We pay $15 a month to the video store for unlimited 3 videos out at a time, AND he has a PS2. He maybe watches the cable a 1/2 hour a day, maybe.

I won't miss DD watching commericals on NickJr.

I *never* thought I would be someone to live without cable, but we dropped it a few months ago and I really haven't missed it at all. We have to pay $10 per month to get local channels and whatnot through the cable company b/c we get zero channels without it, but that is wasy better than the $56 we were paying every month!

Good for you!! I remember being so afraid of cancelling that I put it off for several months, each month thinking "Okay, this is the month that I'll cancel it" and not being able to do it. I watch SO much less TV now and in fact, most of the time can't be bothered to sit there and watch. I still get NBC and Global (a Canadian channel) and so I tape Prison Break, and occasionally catch House, Bones, Crossing Jordan, and Brothers and Sisters. I thought I'd die but I didn't. When I was pg I was so used to sitting on the couch on my days off (or after I'd had him and was on my mat leave) and watching TLC and Dr. Phil all day.

Good for you!
I tried this for a few months and reverted back
We have Comcast and we have their 'basic cable' for $11 a month. We only get 20 channels, but it's everything we would watch anyway. (Ok, I do miss Comedy Central )

We did this a couple of months ago--cancelling out "big" cable to just get the basic version. We have 20 channels, but they're the network channels, the local gov channels (think town council meetings rebroadcast) and two shop at home channels...we watch a lot of PBS when the TV is on. Don't regret it for a second. Good for you!

Congratulations! I did the same thing on Weds! My dh is away for several months so I won't use the digital cable. It was sort of sad turning in the cable box though. Now I'm spending about $8 a month on basic, and that's just fine with me! I'm saving $55 a month! It was hard to do even though I don't watch much tv, but I'm glad I did it!
