UC concerns

Ok, in planning my UC I have only a few concerns right now and they are really strange and random lol

My baby is due in January. RSV season. Ideally I would like to take baby in to the doctor in the first week, at the end of the first week, to be checked and I think that would help in obtaining a birth certificate too. But it will be RSV season! Hero had RSV and we had to be in the hospital for a week when she was tiny. I do not not not want to face that again. So what do I do? Do any doctors make house calls still?

I know its a silly concern an a bit premature but I can't stop thinking about it and I can't decide wha t I will do.

Just a thought- could you arrange for a homebirth midwife to come sometime and do a check-up on your babe?

We don't take our kids to the doctor unless we have tried everything else. I had DD at home with a midwife, and she does a newborn check-up with PKU and whatever you want.

If you do go in, make sure you have a good doctor and not one who is ignorant about homebirth.

How will that help you get a birth certificate?

Make sure the office writes you a letter and are cool with you having a UC.

In CA here, some pediatricians will call CPS, even though home birth and UC are not illegal. Some pediatricians consider it a red flag or warning of other parenting problems.

Here in CA also, I was warned to do a delayed birthcertificate as the county investigates and accuses you of baby stealing/selling if you apply early for a birth certificate.

I do not know why. I was just warned about it and followed the instruction given.

Just wanted to add that my pediatrician would (for a price$) make a house call.

Our ped. w/ dd made a house call but I think it is pretty rare. (we also had a MW attended birth w/that one.) I *would* make sure to go in once while pregnant to have verification that you are indeed pregnant. *That* might come in helpful, it's nec. in CA to get a birth certificate. Will write more later....ds is fussing.

As I understand it, the risk for serious RSV is pretty low if the baby is not premature (i.e. lungs underdeveloped.) Even so, I still wouldn't take my newborn into a place swarming with germs!

We had a homebirth midwife we know and trust, who is supportive of UC, do the newborn exam and six-week check-up.

As for the birth certificate, I am pretty sure that in Colorado it's not difficult to get one after a UC. Have you tried asking about it on CBirth (at yahoogroups)? I bet you could find some info about it there.

Good advice. I am on the cbirth group but I just lurk. When my lurking phase is over I will ask if anyone knows about colorado laws. I also think I am going to call the gov office and ask what i will need so I can be prepared in advance.
I am having prenatals at the clinic here so I will definately have prenatal records. I know our family doctor (though we have not seen him in like a year because we are so healthy) pretty well and he goes to our church. He didn't say anything about Hero's homebirth so I am not sure of his opinion on it. But I might have dh talk to him and see if he would be willing to make a house call. It is definatelly a possibility. I will also talk to the midwife I used with Hero and see if she could do it. SHe lives a couple of hours away so I don't know if she would want to make the drive...but you never know.
ANyway, thanks for all the advice. I have lots of options I'm sure.
