Brief Intro

Hello everyone! I am Mothering subscriber since before the birth of my first baby in '98, and I am currently expecting my third child in a few weeks. This will be my first homebirth (my other two were tub babies-both in hosp. with a wonderfully supportive doctor, terrific experiences, really, but now it's time for the most logical step for my family)

I am curious, how many of those with experience delayed or refused Vitamin K for your newborns? I am interested in gathering more info about it because I don't want anything that I believe to be unnecessary.

Thanks for allowing me an intro...I look forward to getting to know you!

Weclome! I believe I've seen you on other boards a lot! Glad you made it here.

If you do a Search on 'Vitamin K', you'll find tons and tons of info here. Look in the Vaccinations forum, too.

In short, it is NOT necessary and it has consequences. Many babies experience jaundice after receiving the Vit K shot.

In my opinion, your gentle homebirthed to be babe doesn't need anything that is standard protocol in your hospital births.

Take care!!

I agree with you but I will check out the resources on the web concerning it just to have more info.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome!

My son had Vit K b/c he was born in a hospital and that was their procedure. However, as an apprentice homebirth midwife I have never seen a baby be administered Vit K.

The only time I would consider it for my own baby was in the event of a traumatic delivery.
