Sarasota area meet-ups - Page 128

Hi everyone!

Hey, is anyone into the local LLL? I'm a retired leader (ds, my youngest, weaned at 2.9 yrs old a bit over a year ago) and was thinking it would be a great place to meet other moms and get involved with helping moms breastfeed. If you are involved, let me know when and where. Thanks!

D, thanks! A is doing really well, she is such a calm and content baby. I'm doing well too. We'd love dinner any time you are ready. Thanks again

Nicka, I used to go to the LLL in North Port for a while but stopped going when summer vacation came. It is a great group of women. They were looking for more leaders a while back and asked me but I was just too busy to take it on at the time. A mom named Sarah is the leader now and she's really nice. She used to post here but hasn't in a while. I think the meetings are at her house now and they are on Mondays, maybe the 2nd Monday of the month? I'll try to find out for you.

Thanks! I did hook up today via email with Julia and Debra, two local leaders, so hopefully it will get things started. I am going to need to find a part time job eventually but as I doubt it will be something in my own field unless I can score an adjunct spot at a local univ., I'll have to re-think career options. Until then at least I can get involved and meet a few people.

Toured the Y today (near Palmer Ranch). Super-nifty place. Hopefully we'll be able to join there once dh gets his working schedule off the ground. I'd like for the kids to have swim lessons and maybe do the swim team next year.

Okay...I need recommendations like:

Haircut? (I have thick curly hair, need someone good who will actually listen to me)

Auto mechanic (have an older Chevy Venture, need a reliable, honest mechanic)

Ob/gyn

Barber shop/kids' haircuts place

Chinese or other Asian food (preferably with an extensive veggie section as we won't be eating the meat things)

(good) pizza

Thanks!

Hi Ladies, hope you all are doing well

N- All my recommendations would probably be too far for you. I get my hair cut in Port Charlotte, I don't know a good mechanic, I get my annual exams done at the birthing center, but before that I saw Dr Cohen in Sarasota. My ds has his hair cut in the plaza where our store is in Venice, but that's a drive for you too. I like the pizza at Mama Maria's on 41 in Venice. We just went to Cosmo's in the Mall and that was yummy too. I wish I knew of a good chinese place. Still looking for one. I'll check out the yahoo group tonight

D- I'm happy to hear you had a great experience Which store? I wish it was closer too! I have seen you several times driving in the neighborhood, but I'm not close enough to get your attention to say hello. Do you still want the prefolds? I completely forgot to drop them off.

J- I am so happy to hear that A is a calm and content baby . Is this a good week to start the meals? Is it ok if I give it to you in the am at school? I am working everyday this week so it will be easier if I can bake at night and give it to you when I drop T off . Does anyone else already have a day this week?

A- I still owe you some miso soup! I have not forgotten but I haven't been to Whole Foods since way before E was born and that's where I get all the ingredients. Someday I will get to go there and I will make an extra batch for you when I do. How is everything going with the kids and with DH's job hunt?

G- thinking of you everyday and sending lots of positive thoughts your way for a beautiful (and easy!) birth.

Nica, I think all my suggestions would be too far too. We like China one in Port Charlotte for chinese. I actually like first choice haircutters for haircuts, it is inexpensive but they know their stuff. I'll probably get my annual exams at Birthways birth center from now on (I'm pretty sure they do them now) and they are in Sarasota so that might be close to you.

M, my H is back on vacation so he'll probably be dropping A off this week in car line but I can probably arrange for him to find you in the morning. Thanks for offering Any day is fine.

Nicka- I can recommend a dentist and a birth center in your area. They do handle well woman care. I'm too far away for the rest

Thanks for the well wishes. I swore I was in labor yesterday, but no go. I am so, so ready to meet baby. It's a bit depressing now 41+2. Prayers please! DH started his leave, so thats a positive at least.

D & A- so happy the girls love dance! Take some pics of them together!

Nicka- Birthways is doing well woman care, so that is also my reccomendation. I haven't seen a dentist in far too long b/c the one local holistic dentist retired, but I'd be willing to drive for a good dentist. Great veggie friendly chinese would be Ho's Garden for me (YUM!) and pizza is hard to find really good here, but the best I've had lately has been fillipos on the corner of university and lockwood ridge. Thai food is usually more about veg options, and there are a few good places downtown- and I like Thai palace in bradenton. If you like sushi Yume downtown is delish. My mechanic specializes in my type of car, so not too much help there. I have yet to find a stylist I really like who doesn't charge way out of my price range, but I know a lot of people who really like whittney at new york hair on fruitville by the interstate. I rarely get a cut, but next time will be with her probably.

miami- Maybe now that things are settled with DH's leave and that relief will help baby come. I know it'll be soon! And hopefully the practice run a few days past will have made your body really ready for the real thing.

G, that is great that your H is on leave now. Maybe you can get some rest and quiet time and hopefully go into labor very soon. Do something nice for yourself, you've been so patient and you deserve it. Thinking of you.

Thanks Rebirth and everyone!

As for the well woman care...my concern is that I just turned 40 and I am having issues related to getting a little older. It runs in my family that these things happen on the early side and I need a practitioner who can deal with it without going straight to 'get on the Pill'. But I also need someone who, if I do get pregnant, is a natural birth advocate. Not always easy to find someone. But I will try Birthways and see if they are up for handling an 'older woman.'

They have been great in my experience. I've had my last 2 babies with Christina. They are definitely natural birth advocates, they do home and birth center births

yep, it sounds like you'll fit well at birthways.

Ob/gyn

(good) pizza
Auto mechanic: Scott's Auto Repair 355-3117 on US 41 across from the airport. We used them for years and always got a fair deal.

Ob/gyn: Dr Dianne Jardno on Stickney Point Road 925-8885 She is excellent. I think you'd need to book well in advance but I bet she would be a great help for a 40yo. She does not do pregnancies. Birthways also does annuals etc, oops I see that's already mentioned.

Pizza: I like Primo which is very near by Scott's Auto on 41. Primo's has 1/2 price all pasta & pizza entrees before 6 PM, if you buy any drink with the meal. Awesome food!

HTH

M - DH is stay-at-home for the present, looking into RN training and enjoying life generally. Me too, all things considered. Gosh, don't worry about the miso! Maybe someday we can have a cooking get-together, we'd all bring ingredients to one house and cook a meal & eat it. I would dig that!

Dd also does gymnastics at Horizon http://www.horizongymnastics.net/ It's on 41, so that may be an option for you Nicka. I don't think it would be too far if you take 41.

There is also a dance shoe store in Sarasota called Daisy's that might be able to give you Mamas details on dance schools in the area.
Thanks G And I seen your water broke...hope you're holding your new babe now

Me too! I haven't heard from her since yesterday morning when she sent the email to say her water had broken. I'm seeing our MW today so hopefully they'll say that she's at home cuddling with her new baby girl. : I'm hoping she didn't have to have a really long labor like last time.
I had my 2 week pp visit today and asked if everything was ok with G and they said her baby was born last night and both mama and baby are doing well!

CONGRATS G and family!! Welcome baby girl!!!! I can't wait for you to post the details. I'm so happy you had a nice birth, it sounds like it was much easier this time around. :

She's here, she's here: Baby Sabrina Lily was born last night at 8pm here at home! Too tired for many details, but she is a tiny little thing. 6#14oz and 21 1/4" long. She looks a lot like ds and had super long fingers and toes. I feel pretty darn good today Thanks for all the well wishes Mamas! I can't wait for you guys to meet her!
