I will be 8 weeks pregnant tomorrow.

I have a TERRRRRRRRRRIBLE Cough!! I've looked on the internet and can't find anything.. It just tells me certain things in medicines not to take.

If anyone knows of a website that will tell me what I can take, that would be wonderful!

With an 11 month old and coughing all night long, you can only imagine how much sleep I'm getting! lol

Thanks a bunch in advanced

(also, i've called the doc. and I can't get anyone to answer me!)

I went to the doctor with a nasty cold and cough when I was 4 weeks PG. Usually I don't go to the doc for stuff like that but I wasn't getting any sleep and I couldn't take it anymore! So I know how you feel. You have my sympathies!

Basically there isn't much you can take for coughs during PG. I was told that most OTC cough remedies don't actually work anyway and drinking water would help just as much. Not sure I buy that. She did say I could take Benadryl before bed which would make me sleepy and dry up the postnasal drip that triggers the cough. I didn't really believe that either but I tried it and I was able to get a little more sleep each night.

Good luck! Maybe there are herbal remedies that others can suggest?

You might look for a homeopathic cough syrup (check ingredients carefully) and/or go to see a homeopath who can choose the right remedy for you. This is a non-toxic and often very effective option.

Try this website. It's got a full index of drugs that are safe and not safe during pregnancy. HTH.

ETA: of course a natural remedy would be best, but sometimes that just won't cut the mustard...

This won't work for you if you're on a super-strict diet (ie no caffeine AT ALL), but I remember hearing somewhere that dark chocolate is just as good for coughs as OTC remedies. It's worth a try!

homeopathy, definitely, and I think plain Mucinex is OK while PG (just guaifenesen sp?) no other ingredients, I know the gals use it for TTC so I assume it is OK PG ?? but doble check...

my doc suggested this while i was BF

i talked to teh pharmist who was willing to LOOK IT UP -- not jsut say "oh it is fine" off the top of her head like the GP at urgent care....

it is SAFE -- buttttttttt pharmist told me -- drinking a lot of extra water is JUST AS EFFECTIVE -- and of course safer.

just a thought

another question about meds.. i couldn't find the info on the above link... (alli could find is reg. sudafed)

on the weekend, i had a horrible sinus cold.. after spending the whole night awake with high fever (um, i'm pretty sure i was hallucinating some too!), i gave in and let my dh give me 1 sudafed cold and sinus pill.. it worked great, i instantly went to sleep and woke up feeling a gazillion times better...

but, someone, please tell me that it's not gonna hurt my baby i tried all the natural remedies i could think of (in my delirious haze LOL) and have been pushing the water like crazy.

pregnant women shouldn't be allowed to get sick!!! i mean, i was feeling pretty crappy before all this happening, with the constant nausea and barfing :

I got rid of a cyst. A CYST I tell you! Just from doing this. (After having surgery TWICE to have them removed in the past)

Your sinuses have cillia, like your lungs- everyone knows that smoking causes the little hairs in your lungs to clog and loose function, but the sinuses get overlooked. The cillia need to be "cleansed" periodically to keep them at full function. Like cleaning the filters to your a/c or heater.

For sinuses get a Neti Pot. Really, I can't say it enough that most if not all respritory/sinus conditions can be cured or at least prevented by doing sinus rinses.

At the very least, get a $2 bottle of saline spray and use it constantly. Lean forward when you do it and only gently sniff in each nostril. Not inhale. You want it in your nose, not throat.

For maximum results, do full on "irrigation". If you can't get a Neti Pot (they run around $20) Get an infant's nasal aspirator/snot sucker... a new one!!! and use it just like a Neti Pot. If you can't do that, just use your cupped hands. The only thing you really need is some good sea salt. Though there are salts sold specifically for the purpose of irrigation you can use what you would find in most supermarkets, just make sure it's "unrefined". That means it has what it should and nothing else was added.

Use maybe 1/8-1/4 TEASPOON of salt for a small glass of warm NOT HOT water, put half in your vessle of choice (neti pot, aspirator or hand), tilt your head to the SIDE and let the water flow into the top nostril. You may have to help it a little and it will feel weird... really really weird. Ultimately, you should let the water flow through from one side and out the other. After the water is gone, hang your head forward and allow the remaining water to drip out the front and down your throat. Repeat on the other side.

If you are having some active sinus issues, do this a few times a day, otherwise do it every day! I've avoided a few head cold things that my normally healthy husband came down with after I started rinisng again.
