1st midwife appt - the good and the bad

DH and I met with our MW yesterday. Overall it was a good appt. We both really like her, find her engaging and enthusiastic, and she's only taking 3 clients per month (cutting back from 4-5 last year) so she's trying to be very picky, and we feel lucky to get her.

She couldn't find the HB, which was a bit disappointing, but I wasn't expecting it really, just that everyone else seems to be finding them! Still no idea how far along I am, and still no appt for an u/s - it takes over a week to even book the appt - never mind when it will actually be!

The one rather alarming part was that apparently the College of Midwives here has been censuring MWs left, right and centre, which means that they are then not allowed to work for a month, typically. It almost sounds like they are trying to shut down the midwifery program here, since they are also supposed to be hiring two more MWs at this clinic soon, since they have one going on mat leave, but they are dragging their feet on posting the positions. It is such a shame that midwifery in this province is not better supported by the government.

So, overall a good appt, but just wish that Sprig would have showed up.

There's been a few problems, but one of the main reasons seems to be that there is a bit of a divide between those midwives who were trained at universities and those trained as apprentices in terms of their relationships with their clients, with the latter often being slapped on the wrist for not being at enough of a remove. I personally have no problem with having a close personal relationship with one's MW and don't think it ought to get in the way of their clinical evaluation of your pregnancy and birth but that is not how it is necessarily seen by others.
