bed alternative

Our daughter is 10 weeks old. We just went to set up the crib we have from DD1. There is an issue with bolts that makes the crib useless.
We are looking to buy another crib but they are expensive and there are no used ones to be found.
Has anybody ever not used one? Has anybody ever bought a bed and put it on the floor and used bed rails???
Advice is needed and welcome.

We never even had a crib in the house. Dd has just been in our bed from day one.

Safer and better for everyone IMO.

Welcome!!

We had a crib but it was used maybe 10 times for 3 of our children.
For our last, we put it up and ended up just throwing her clothes in there. After a few months we took it down, put another mattress on the floor and life was good.

What size bed are you in now? I would suggest just spending the $ on getting a king (if you dont have one) instead of buying another crib. Or even getting a single mattress to put on the floor next to yours. A much better investment, imo.

p.s I'm in winnipeg too!

Our very nice crib is now a very nice stuffed animal zoo! We started with ds in a co-sleeping nest thingy on the bed with us but that turned out to be a massive waste of money seeing as after the first night it was a cat bed instead

It is so much cheaper and easier to just put the baby into bed with you-easy boob access=more sleep for all!

Good luck finding something that works for you!

We have a queen bed and we would love a king but there isn't enough room.
I hardly used the crib for my first daughter who is 8+1/2 now. We didn't bother setting up the crib for daughter #2 because there was no need at first. Baby is either in the bassinette beside our bed or she is in our bed on a chiropractic pillow. She is outgrowing the bassinette so that is why we thought we would set up the crib. It sickens us to think of her across the hall in her own room...LOL
Anyway, one of the ideas we are tossing around is to buy a mattress, boxspring and bedrails to put along the side. What do others here think?
That when when baby is a bit older she can start off in her bed and then come to ours.

So buying her a "big" bed but keeping it in her room or your room?

We've used the second mattress in our room - between the wall and our bed and its worked very well for us.

A friend put a single mattress right on the floor (in separate room) pushed up against a wall and side rails on the other side. It worked out fine until he learned to crawl and roll. Then he was always out of the bed before she could get to him. But I wonder if she could have "fixed" it by putting up more rails. But who wants to buy 6 or 7 rails?

Before we got the second mattress in our room, we had a queen. We put the matt up against the wall (just the matt, no boxspring) then dh, babe and I all slept in it. We had lots of room for a while. We've changed our bedroom around so many times. Added mattress, taken some away, etc. But I should mention that we dont have any dressers or chests in our room, thats part of the big reason we currently can fit a king and a queen in there. (We built floor to ceiling shelves in our closet - its packed!)

Good luck!

I wouldn't juryrig a bed, which is what it sounds like you're contemplating. How would you ensure the bedrails wouldn't pull away from the mattresses and your daughter get caught between?

Since she's still so light, what about using a pack-n-play or something like that? It's less expensive than a crib.

We bought a crib and mattress new from Toys R Us for about $200. Our son is almost 4 months old and it's never been used. It's a convenient place to store diapers and toys for now, but I really wish we hadn't even bothered with it. He sleeps comfortably in bed with me every night and has since the day he was born. Fortunately, the crib converts to a toddler bed, so hopefully we'll be able to get some use out of it when he's older.
