4-month-old ds is tugging at his ear. . .

Should I be worried? It just started a couple of days ago, and has become more and more frequent. He only tugs his right ear (and just kind of plays with it). He does it whenever he is nursing on my right breast, and whenever he is lying on his back. He doesn't have a fever, but has been kind of fussy. I was thinking it was just a comfort thing, but is it possible it could be an ear infection?

Thanks!

dd is doing this at the moment too, when lying down and nursing. I thought it was a sign of ear infection and asked the ped. at her 4 months check up. Ped. said everything was fine and she'd just discovered she has ears. Can't hurt to get it checked. Do you have a 4 mo check up soon?

my 7 mo old did this too at about 4 months, her check up too was fine. i think she just discovered she had an appendage on the right side of her head. kind of like when you have a zit and can't stop touching it.

ditto to the above! my ped told me that kids don't start tugging on their ears to indicate pain/ear infection until later on.

if he doesn't have any other symptoms of illness (fussiness and crying, esp. when prone instead of upright), I would highly doubt it's an ear infection - he's bf and not in daycare.

we bought an otoscope (they're not expensive) to have in our medicine chest; you might think about getting one and asking your ped next time you're in to show you what to look for in a healthy ear.

Aaron's doing the exact same thing - I was a bit concerned but not too worried since he had no other signs of an infection. Glad ot see he's not the only one!
