Help me eliminate dryer sheet stink!!!!

I don't use dryer sheets - anymore, having studied their evils while learning to care for cloth diapers.

I just read that in addition to other nastiness, they are designed to leave a PERMANENT smell.

I went to my basement to get an old sweater I suddenly needed. I had put my sweaters away while I was pregnant. And to keep them from getting eau-de-basement - eeeks, I put a dryer sheet in with each sealed plastic bag of sweaters!!!

Much of the smell came out of a cotton one, and virtually none of the smell came out of the acrylic. I do have lots of acrylic sweaters, as my mother is an avid knitter but not a fiber conniseur.

Can anyone here beat the industry and get the smell (and toxic molecules) out of my clothes?

Thanks!!

I bought a pair of Old Navy jeans at Goodwill that reaked of fabric softener. The first regular wash didn't even put a dent in the smell. I washed them in hot with almost a cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup borax & about 1/2 cup washing soda. I know that seems like a lot, but we have really hard water too. I let them soak for about an hour. I use vinegar in the rinse cycle also. This worked. I think the borax was the biggest help.
