I am brainstorming how to set up our home so that the toys are contained, but easily accessable and so that I can get things accomplished while the children are playing. Our home is relatively large, with an upstair and a basement that is finished. We don't have a ton of stuff, we are not savers, so we have plenty of open space and rooms that can be converted.
Here is my idea.
Turn the basement into a run around/big motor playarea. We have a slide, basketball hoop, some push toys, and some giant boxes down there. Also the train table and a zillion pieces will stay down there. Also I thought I would put my dd's easle down there and put one of those gates that make a circle around it so my ds wouldn't be able to eat the markers
I'm getting a gate for the steps so that the kids can play down there while I work in the kitchen which is at the top of the steps.
Turn an extra bedroom upstairs into a waldorfy playroom. It is a smaller space, about 10x12, with a small closet. We have many wooden toys, play kitchen, blocks, silks, waldorf dolls, tree stackers, wooden dominoes, etc. that could go in that space. The walls are already painted a nice soft blue. There really isn't any furniture in the room right now, so it would be pretty easy to transform. I could put a gate at the door and then I could do my upstairs work while they had a safe place to play.
That would leave very few toys for the main floor. But really, unless we are watching t.v. or I am cooking (with or without kids) we don't really stay there. So I figure they could bring something in there if they wanted it, then just take it back where it belonged later.
Any input?
