I thought this was a really balanced look at homeschooling. I found the idea of short term homeschooling interesting. What are your thoughts on it.

First, I love Brain,Child magazine!

Second, I enjoyed the article. My DSs are currently in public school, but I am considering homeschooling them for one year in a few years when I would be able to travel with them (to DC, Philadelphia, all those places you learn about in school).

We started with the intention of homeschooling for a year. In fact, several members of our homeschool group had the same intentions. Now, we are finishing our third year and will most likely homeschool through high school. You never know where this journey will take you.

Theres a good book about a Father and Daughter in a short term homeschooling situation:
The Dan Riley School for a Girl :
an adventure in home schooling /

I believe at the end of the year she goes to Catholic school rather than back to public school.

I think short term homeschooling is an awesome way to get sucked into it.

I knew a child in my school life whose parents homeschooled him during the middle school years because they hated the public schools we had for that age group. For high school, he went back to PS with us. I was always amazed, even as a peer, by how....centered he had become.

I also think that any objections to full out homeschooling would be completely obviated by a short term duration. No one could complain about "socialization" or "keeping up with the kids" or "learning how life really is." It strikes me as a good solution to those who want to try it out and for those who want to avoid a specific school or situation.

We started our homeschooling journey as a short term solution to a wait list/ food allergy problem, but I really don't know how we'd send them to school at this point. I can't imagine that life.

(Incidentally I intended to breastfeed for only 6 months or so...... 6years later here I am, nursing a third two-year-old. You get sucked into good things.)
