I'm packing right now for an extended trip out of town in the morning, so I can't contribute much except to suggest that you read this MDC thread on
Common misconceptions about homeschooling - as well as the sticky above on non-religious articles about homeschooling. There's a thread around here somewhere in which a few cons were listed - seems to be they had mostly to do with things like finding enough time for yourself.

I think that's totally doable; many people homeschool for some portion or another of their kids' educations, whether it's the beginning, middle, or end. My parents took one of my younger siblings out in middle school, intending to hs for a few years (to escape our dismal middle school -- wasn't too awful when I was there, but it got much worse a few years later) and then to put that child back in public school in high school. They all liked it so much that that child never went back to public school. The sibling behind that one left public school in early elementary school and never went back. Both went to college and did beautifully.

If higher academics are a concern for you, many colleges allow high school students to take some classes from them. Some homeschool groups also band together to offer advanced classes that an individual family might not be able to provide. And a homeschooled high schooler may have the opportunity to participate in community work, internships, etc. that will look good on college applications and such.

Go to Yahoo Groups and find your local support groups. Start joining in for park days and other relaxed meetings. Homeschoolers love to share their experience and are very welcoming to newcomers.

I know people who have began homeschooling in the older years, but it's been out of necessity rather than something they planned from the get-go.

Personally, I think that sending a kid to school for several years with the idea of bringing them home later is a poor plan. For one, if they really wind up enjoying school and doing well there (I've heard that there are people like this ), they may see being brought home as a negative thing. Secondly, if they end up NOT doing well and/or despising school, or having social issues, then damage will have inevitably been done.
