My midwife suggested alfalfa tabs, because although I don't look like I'm swelling, I can feel tightness in my fingers (wedding ring is off!) and a little in my toes certain times of the day.
The alfalfa is a blood-builder and also helps to balance where the body holds the extra fluid. More in the blood, less in the tissues is good. It's a nutritious supplement, not a drug and you can take upwards of 16-20 per day if necessary.
I'm sure someone with a more scientific and/or nutrition background can explain it better.
