I had the nicu in my cell phone. I put it in while in my hospital bed recovering from my c section 2 hours earlier

HEre is another you know your a nicu parent:

Tonight, I was making rice and a year ago I made this rice for a nicu dinner party we had. We had 3 other couples come over since one was stranded here from Ohio and they wanted to just be normal. The weather and everything was the same as tonight. As I am making the rice, an anxiousness came over me, like I had to go to Loyola tonight to visit and then I picked up the phone to call them- my reverie was interupted by Maggie screeching and LOL....

anyone else ever have this??

Tom still reminds me that I got : with him over taking so long to get the car. I was SURE they were going to try stop us from leaving!!

I sighed in relief when we finally got on the road and said "they didn't stop us we're really going home already!!"

You cry when the gas station attendant says, "isn't she big for 9 months?"

You cry for joy when the neo tells you she's completely caught up, developmentally and physically, 1-2 years ahead of schedule.

The security guards in the hospital still recognize you, and you've been out of the NICE for almost a year.

When looking at nursing schools, you almost immediately shoot down the one that is associated with your baby's hospital of birth...until you realize that only leaves you with one school in your area to choose from.

Her first birthday is spent suffering anxiety attacks, and sobbing every time you look at her, because you're having flashbacks.

Your ped (who did a NICU rotation and specialized in 30wkrs) hugs you when he has to tell you that your FT, totally healthy baby contracted RSV.

We had Chicken and Dumplings on MAggie's first bday because I took it out that afternoon of her birth from the freezer since I had a late Dr's appt. DH didnt get home until the next day to see defrosted and smelly chicken & dumplings on the counter. So I made it on her bday since we couldnt have it the day we planned to.

When I put on of those teeny tiny diapers in my scrapbook, I took the stuffin out- it was literally a piece of of 2 x 2 gauze. or depending on how you see it.

my book has Maggie's name in a roller coaster fashion. Also has the bracelets we wore in the nicu, her gerber sleeper, and I think leads too.

You've got more photos than I do then. I didn't even have my camera with me the day my twins came home so no pics there. I had to call dh to bring the second carseat because I only had 1 and didn't know they were coming home. I didn't even think camera. I was too worried they were going to change their mind about discharging them. I have 1 photo of Lydie at the hospital the day she came home and the only reason I remembered to snap a picture was because they made her redo the carseat test when I got there to pick her up and I had to wait an hour for that.

I'm really not into pictures though. I hate looking at NICU pics and I didn't take very many. I didn't save any blood pressure cuffs, canulas, etc either. I do however have every single hat worn by all 3 of my preemies in the NICU.

I actually do wish we had pics now from their homecomings. At the time I had a weird aversion to it, I don't know why - we have hundreds of NICU photos but none of them coming home. I don't even remember what they wore - whatever the nurses dressed them in that day, I guess.

I did have one fun moment leaving with Kate (who came home 2 days after Lilly). I was sitting in a wheelchair (9 weeks post c-section, which is funny to me, but it's hospital policy) and holding Kate, and going down the front hallway we passed a couple we became good friends with in the NICU. The husband held out his arm and slapped my hand as if I were a marathon runner in the home stretch. Which, I suppose, I kind of was!

However, we were at the hospital 2 weeks ago (same hospital my girls were in) and in the bathroom they had the same soap they had in the NICU. Horrible stuff that made me break out in hives. And I was so excited to see it! And smell it. I got all teary eyed. My dds asked why mommy was sad and I just couldn't explain it. I can't now. IT was a mixture of sad & happy--that horrible soap that I swore I'd never, ever use again if I didn't have to. It brought back so many memories.

See I don't mind the soap smell because I didn't get to hold my baby for a day or more after he was born. Then I could only see him once a day for a couple of hours and didn't get to hold him all that much.

So for me the soap smell is excitement!:
