already thinking...slings!

I currently have a MOBY and I love it, but I am thinking baout looking into other kinds for this one.

i have to sling this baby, nochoice unless I want to buy a triple stroller for a gazillion bucks and that ain't happenin'

I have a nice double jogger for my 2 little ones currently ( they are 2.5 and 1.5) so yeah, no choice but to use a stroller so this one is getting a nice cozy sling

I love the moby, but what have you moms found to be a good newborn young baby type sling and why? Or what are you thinking about getting as well and why?

I have a Storchenwiege wrap that I used with my last baby and I love it. I will definitely use that again. I also have a Maya pouch that I may use from time to time when I am in a hurry and just need to pop the baby in for a short period of time.

I like a pouch or ring sling for quick trips but I am going to get comfortable with my wrap and mei tai this time as I really need something that is supported on both shoulders.

I was wondering about the moby wrap because it is stretchier than the others from what I have read. Mine wrap is a woven that I made. Is the moby a loop or a long piece of fabric? I don't have a Storchenwiege but I think it is a woven wrap, a long piece of fabric, with a tiny bit of stretch. Plaid Leopard will correct if I am wrong. I have been thinking about getting one because of the bit of stretch but they are about $100 and if I don't get comfy with it that is alot of money gone.

I'm not Plaid Leopard, but I'm addicted to slings, so I'll chime in. Yes, Storchs are woven instead of stretchy. They're great because you can use them well past the baby years. I still carry DS, almost 3, in a dydymos (an equivalent wrap) all the time. I'm also a big Mei Tai fan, but probably won't use it so much for an infant. I'm thinking a stretchy wrap (saving my pennies for a Gypsy Mama Bali Baby stretch) and a ring sling for easy nursing will get me through the early months and still allow me to run around with my preschooler.

Oh, and as for the price, yes the woven wraps are pricey, and I avoided them for a long time as a result. However, you can get them used through TBW, and if you end up not liking it, they are easy to resell. BY FAR the most useful baby item I purchased, in retrospect.

Yeah the moby is one large piece of fabric basically, and my bff has actually made a few of them for herself with just a few yeards of stretchy cotton fabric. To me it is a thick t-shirt type coton with a bit of give to it.

I have wondered about the Mei Tei's, but I iwll have to check out a few other ones.

My thing...I have yet to figure out how in the heck to nurse IN a moby
and I want something with easy access for NIP, that way I can just whipp'er out LOL!

I know plenty of people do, but it seems complicated to me! I think people loosen it a bit and lower baby down to more convenient nursing height, then, tie it back tight when done.

I actually never nursed in a carrier with DS. With just the 1 kid, it wasn't a problem to just sit and take him out when he wanted to nurse. But I figure with more than 1 kid around, nursing on the go will be essential! I'm thinking a ringsling will be easiest for NIP for me.

I have gone a little carrier crazy this time around: I have a couple homemade mamaroo style wraps (one gauze and one flannel) some ringslings, and 4 mei tais that I made for dd. Now, in the last 6 weeks I have made another ringsling, 5 mei tais, and another wrap. I have material for another ringsling and 3 more mei tais! I am also planning on getting a gypsy mama bali baby stretch That will be my first carrier that I actually buy.

yes, the storch is a woven wrap as the pp have said. It is pricey but I believe well worth the money. You can often find them used on ebay or elsewhere, and if you are not happy with it I'm sure would not be difficult to resell.

My ds was a big baby and big toddler, and I have a bad back, but I was able to comfortably carry him - for hours at a time - until he was 2 1/2 and was always up and down. I'm sure I could still carry him now if he would let me. If you tie it right the weight is mainly on your hips and middle back, not shoulders.
The woven wrap is very useful and versatile. You can front, back, side, cradle carry etc , you just have to practice a little to get used to it.
I didn't really get used to nursing ds in it until he was a bit older, but then again I never really tried. Mainly because he was born in the winter and I was always bundled up in coats and sweaters and scarves and all that.

I have even used the Storch as a swing/hammock. I tied it to a tree branch and even my then 4 year old played in it.

I have a question... How do you know what to buy if you can't try them on beforehand? All of these great carriers are sold mostly on line. Do you order them, try them out and send them back if you don't like them? Or do you order a couple you think you like and hope baby likes them too when they come? If they don't like them, hold on to them, resell them?

With what seems to be so many wonderful carriers out there, it blows my mind there isn't more physical retail stores for them.

I think a lot of (some?) places have a good return policy if the carrier just doesn't work for you.

I was considering an Ergo last year. I saw a woman at the playground with one and asked her about it. She let me try hers on with my son in it so I could get an idea. (Now she is my best friend here - so glad I got up the courage to ask about her Ergo...)

Also, if you have a la leche league group near you you will probable see a lot of women with various carriers who would be glad to give you tips and let you try them out.

There is a store nearby so I thankfully can try before I buy. But, before that, I bought a ring sling and I really didn't like it at all. This time, I will wait for baby to arrive, then swing by the local shop and see what works for us.

yeah I have had ring slings before and did not care for them because I have problems with large amounts of weight bearing down on my shoulders * neck area ( the shoulders pull the neck area on me...)
( have had a maya wrap and a over the shoulder baby holder before...)

Thats why I have fallen in love with Moby, because it litereally distributes the weight ALL OVER in all types of ways of carrying.

My thing is, I just want ed to see if there was something easier out there to nurse a baby in, but I dunno, someone mentioned them being born in winter, and with this baby coming in the fall, maybe NIP wont' be as much of an issue as I am thinking?

What about hot slings? Anyone ever tried one of those? I know those are kind of like ring slings though...hmmm...

They are only about $40.00 I wanna say...but they have a new one called Moby D and that one is more like $56.00 I think? or something.

Yeah i always felt like my newborns would get lost in the ring slings or fall out the bottom I was clueless about how to get them in their right. BUt I like the ring/pouch slings for when they are older esp. for hip carrying...I think they look like thw work good that way.

awesome. I actually just googled "moby slings" and found "the sling station" they sell them for $35.00

I am so excited, as w/ my ring sling, I couldn't do much, and like the op said, it killed my 1 shoulder and back.. I also found I couldn't push a shopping cart while wearing it, so the Moby looks awesome....It totally looks like I have use of both arms... (great for chasing my toddler and holding a newborn at the same time) Thanks so much ladies...

I have purchased two mamma's milk slings so far, one for me and one for my husband. I didn't wear my ds, but he was always in my arms. I definitely have high hopes to wear our little one on the way!

I am interested in the moby wrap as well. Or maybe something else... still looking for ideas. Our baby may be on the small side, so I want something that will work for the best.

You guys are so restrained. I want one of everything. I have a Hug-a-bub, but I sort of want a Moby because they seem stretchier... and I'd like a really cute ring sling, and a pouch, and a storch or a Didymos, and a Babyhawk mai tai.

Does that seem excessive? It's hard to know what I'll like best. I'm leaning now toward maybe just trying to get a pouch of some kind (hotsling maybe, or peanut shell, or rockin' baby pouch...) and the mai tai for the start, along with the wrap I already have.

I've thought about getting a Mei tai type carrier but I can't afford to buy anything at all right now. Honestly though, I really LOVE my Storch. Perhaps my only complaints would be that it can get hot in the summer, and sometimes it is a pain to have to rewrap, especially if there is no place to put the baby down. But other than that, I found it to be very comfortable and practical.

I think they all have good uses (but I already have a bunch of different types). I have found that they all take a little practice to get comfortable with, I have bought based on what purpose I think it will serve, reviews, and how pretty they are. : I don't think I would pass one by just because I couldn't get the hang of it in 10 minutes while being watched in a bricks and mortar store.

I plan on adding several types of wraps this time around - I already have three in mind. I know it is excessive but I do continue to wear my babies for a long while. I could go on and on but right now I am doing mostly high back carries because I can tie the straps over my belly. For quick trip I am using a ring sling for a hip carry. I got dh a pouch because they are simplest but I prefer the ring sling because it is more adjustable. I'll stop now.
