anyone homeschooling Deaf child?

I am hearing household. we are raising our children bilingual (ASL/English) as our oldest son is severely apraxic (but hearing) and younger son is severely Deaf. We've spent the last year at the Deaf school being immersed and learning as much as we can, as well as regular 'dates' with Deaf friends to keep current and learn more ASL.

Anyone successful at teaching their Deaf child to read English? One that does not get much from hearing aids and ASL is first language? and we ARE NOT getting CI's!!!!

From what I understand about the deaf community I would suspect you would homeschool your deaf children the same way you would a hearing person who speaks a different language. So if your family was primarily speaking Spanish at home you'd homeschool in Spanish. Since your family speaks using ASL with the kids it should be no different of a situation, right?

Thanks for link. I'm a member there, but no one there is doing what I'm doing.

Most there are English primary language. ASL as primary language is different apparently.

The hard part is teaching a Deaf child to read English and then write, etc.

That's a struggle at the Deaf School, too, in teaching Deaf to read/understand English.

The 'rest' of educating my child is not the problem - so teaching in ASL not the concern. The big concern/worry i have is teaching my child to read/write FLUENT English. English really is a screwy language. It really doesn't make logical sense.

Esp when your child is severely Deaf - there's not much hearing to 'hear' sounds/phonics, etc.



Ah well.

I keep hoping there's someone else out there who's going this approach.
