Scented Funk Butter

TO: Papschmitty, Mom2J, Rockycrop, Colleen2, gool0005
Have any of you experienced irritation when using the scented Funk Butter?
I have had irritation after a few months of use. I *think* the culprit was the bs because I had the same problem with my CO and bs mixture, so I use it only a few times a week.

No problems at all! DH switched to the cedar fig funk butter after regular deodorant was making his pits raw. He hasn't had any problems either. I agree with the previous poster - I think many times when people get irritation from Funk Butter it's more due to the baking soda that the scenting agents but that's a totally uneducated guess.

Funk Butter

I had a bad reaction to the Unscented Funk Butter, so in this case I'm sure it was the baking soda.

Sorry I haven't been able to read this entire thread, but I'd be interested to know of anything else I could try down here in the south. I tried the crystal, which kept me smelling great, but I'd always end up with sweaty armpits that showed through my clothes. Quite embarrassing. Even regular anti-antiperspirants have the same effect! But I'd like to avoid anything with propylene glycol and baking soda - rash issues. Hoping there's a better alternative.

I'll subscribe to this thread for more ideas on what others are using

Here's a 100% organic deodorant. No baking soda or propylene glycol. Won't make you stop sweating, but helps with deodorizing.

Works for me!

I have success with taking Chlorophyll internally. It naturally keeps body odors in check!

BrightonsMom, do your clothes particularly the under the arms get soaked? I don't mind sweating a little, just want to be able to wear anything but dark clothing all the time.

Haven't read all the replies--over 200 posts about deoderant--wow! I like Kiss my face roll-on. No sweaty armpits and no stinkyness.

No I don't get soaked under the arms. I don't know what to tell ya. I've started the chlorophyll as well. Have you tried an organic detox diet?

Scetned Funk Butter

The main reason why I asked if any of the users of the scented Funk Butter experienced any irritation is because the manufacturer states that the scented Funk Butter contains essential and fragrance oils that may cause irritiaton for those with sensitive skin or allergies.

I've since learned from this forum that baking soda can cause similar irritaiton-rashes, raw and peeling skin etc...-to my surprise.

On another note, I have tested a couple of deodorants over the past couple of months and will post my results in the next day or so.

Velcromom, would you be willing to post your recipe? I was so intrigued by your post I went out and bought the ingredients and could just start in with equal parts? But would like a bit of direction.

I have been using just straight BS for about 9 months. Works great for smell, but my underarms seem to have developed a bit of build-up no matter how much I scrub and recently I have a bit of a rash.

It was so funny when I was checking out of the grocery store I had the virgin coconut oil, BS, cornstarch and some lovely apples: the woman checking me out said, "are you making something with apples and coconut? That sounds really good,"
"No, I am attempting to make deodorant."
"OH, cool, with apples?"

Fletchersmama,
Velcromom had previously posted her recipe before (post#144)

Essential oil 3%

I sometimes add a little more or less coconut oil to adjust the spreadability depending on if it's summer or winter.

How long does your homemade deodorant last with just one application? You previously posted that you sometimes had to reapply in the afternoon.

Also, there is another similar recipe posted by Hazelnut that I was thinking of trying if I can't find another deodorant that rivals FUNK BUTTER's deodorant protection.

1 T Shea butter
1 T Coconut Oil
1 T Baking Soda
1 T Corn Starch.
A big squirt of aloe to help thicken it up a bit
Lavender EO for fragrance. (I didn't add that)
and mixed it up and put it in my funk butter tin and I love it. Smells like coconut oil and looks like frosting. I added extra bs to thicken it up a bit (my coconut oil is liquid now) which I'm assuming is fine.

My above mix lasts eternally. I swear. I often wake up the next day and don't get a shower in til later, and I know I won't be smelly. And I was stinky without any deodorant.

No more irritation than with any other deodorants I've tried. I think it may have something to do with shaving as well. I switch days between shaving and putting on the Funk Butter.

You know those commercials for Dove deodorant where all the ladies are wearing tank tops and showing off their smooth, creamy, supple pits? Is that even possible? My armpits have never looked like that, but oh well, at least I smell good now.

Depends on a few things - hormones, the weather. During periods, post-partum and really sweaty hot days, I'll reapply. Most days it lasts well into the night if you start out with clean pits.

My arm pits NEVER look like that and I stopped shaving my pits and switched to waxing approx. three years ago. My underarms are much softer after waxing; however, they still never have that smooth, even tone like in the commercials.I believe part of it is makeup, and I also believe that you can achieve those results from laser hair removal. This is something I've been considering for a year now and I think I may take the actual plunge in the spring. I'm sick of the whole hair removal maintenace every month.

Velcromom:
Thanx for the update. I am also particulary "smelly" during my menstrual cycle as well; So deodorant is a must for me during that time of the month!

Does your mixture dry out or get hard like the Funk Butter or does it maintain its creamy consistency? Also, where did you order your shea butter from?
Does your funk butter get hard? That's interesting- I bought one tin of it early on and mine didn't change in consistency. I did go through it pretty fast though (I tend to use more than a pea sized amount! More like grape sized...) Anyway, no, my mix has stayed creamy in consistency so far, and I made it in June or July I think. My coconut oil was liquid at the time. I keep it in a tin I bought online at specialty bottle. Don't know if that makes a difference.
I got my raw, unrefined shea butter from here. It was recommended to me somewhere here on MDC and I love it. Although, I think my first deo batch might have been from some other shea butter brand that I got on amazon that is nice, but not unrefined or 100% pure.
