DH and I have both been using Hazelnut's recipe for a couple weeks now and have not had any problems with funky shirts. We wash with Charlie's soap and use vinegar in the fabric softener compartment.

If I am getting a shower every day, no problems, otherwise yeah, the shirts can get funky. More so in the summer than now, just because I am not as sweaty in the cooler weather... But it washes out fine.

I keep a bottle of BAC-OUT in my bathroom and spray the underarms of my shirts before I toss them in my laundry hamper each night. I also use Biokleen's liquid laundry detergent as well, and then add baking soda to my rinse cycle whenever I wash my laundry. This combination gets rid of that FUNKY UNDERARM SHIRT ODOR and keeps my laundry smelling fresh! (adding the vinegar to the rinse cycle always seemed to leave a faint vingear smell on my clothes).

No, my shirts don't get funky. I did however just get a few red bumps there though. : Is it possible it's the coconut oil and not the bs? I'm gonna just use a crystal for a few days and take a break, or maybe remix it with more aloe gel or something. Maybe I was using too much. It's only in one armpit though. :

I wonder if there are calming EOs for this. Or has anyone added tto?
I thought about TTO. Will probably add it to my next batch. Hazelnut, does the consistency of your recipe stay the same when the weather heats up? I was wondering the CO would liquify into a goopy mess in the heat. So far, we're loving your recipe! Thank you!
Thanks. I didn't really make it up though. I found it through my friend Google. You know I made it in July when my CO was liquid, but the whole thing stayed creamy (I think I added extra bs and cornstarch too to thicken it a little). So it didn't seem to be effected!

It's good to know that your Homemade Funk Butter recipe doesn't cause that Funky Shirt Smell when perspiring.

The coconut oil may be the culprit in causing those little underarm bumps. Shortly after I began using coconut oil on my face, I also developed little bumps. As soon as I stopped applying the coconut oil to my face, the bumps went away and have never returned. Maybe the oil clogs the pores?

Homemade Deodorant Recipes That Work!

Ladies, here are two homemade "Funk Butter" deodorant recipes that have been tried and tested:

Essential oil 3%

I sometimes add a little more or less coconut oil to adjust the spreadability depending on if it's summer or winter.

1 T Shea butter
1 T Coconut Oil
1 T Baking Soda
1 T Corn Starch.
A big squirt of aloe to help thicken it up a bit
Lavender EO for fragrance. (I didn't add that)
and mixed it up and put it in my funk butter tin and I love it. Smells like coconut oil and looks like frosting.

subbing so I can come back later for the recipe.

Terressentials has just come out with a deodorant. It's the first natural deodorant that ever worked for me. I've only been using it for a few weeks, but so far I'm thrilled!

Here are the ingredients: organic aloe vera juice, baking soda, zeolite, organic extract of wildcrafted usnea, bentonite clay, organic extracts of yucca and white willow.

It's a roll-on liquid, so even though it has baking soda, it doesn't seem irritating. The past few days I've been putting a little black cedar fig funk butter on top for the yummy smell, and that does seem slightly irritating. I don't know if it will cause irritation in the long run like funk butter does for some people, but so far so good!

I smell much better than when using convention deoderants, and it last until the next morning, when I start to get a little funky, though less so than with AridXXX. I should also mention, that it has absolutely NO SMELL. Which is great, since the fragrances in many deodorants actually made me smell worse than with no deodorant at all.

I thought the only deodorant they manufactured was the Super Protection Deodorant (organic) which has been out for some time now. Do they now have a different deodorant? Which scent are you using?

I completely agree that some of the scents of deodorants will make your sweat smell worse than using no deodorant at all! That's why I'm finicky when it comes to using scented deodorants.

Hi I read most of this thread over the weekend and I love it! I tried the coconut oil for 24 hours yesterday and it worked! I went to the gym for 1.5 hours yesterday so I am inpressed! I also mixed up hazelnuts recipe for hommade funk butter and then used it today and I smell great after my workout! I like the homemade funk butter better than the plain coconut oil because it dries powdery and I added lemongrass and orange oil to have a scent. Thanks for posting the recipes! Also, Grrlsix I noticed you are interested in laser hair removal. I am doing laser hair removal since last may and I love it! It is an investment and a very lenghty process. I have pale skin and dark hair so I am a great canditate. I am getting my face, underarms, upper and lower arms, abdomen, bikini and legs done. I would stop waxing about 3 months before you want to start and only shave the areas no tweezing the areas. I hair folicule/root needs to be healty in order for the laser to sense and destroy the hair. PM me if you want more details about the laser hair removal. Thanks for all the good info!

Wow! This is a long thread. I didn't read very much of it. So I am sorry if I am repeating anyone. My dh and I have used so many differrent natural deo's. I either get horrible rashes or stink or worse both! I got a rash from a crystal so bad it took a month to get rid of it. But after many failed tries I have found a deo that we both LOVE. It has never given me a rash. Neither of us have gotten b.o using it. Unless: I have been sick and didn't shower or reapply for a couple days. http://www.aubrey-organics.com/produ..._id=082&cat=17 We live in AZ and as you know it gets warm here in the summer and this deo is desert proof! And I don't shave my underarms either. Tina~

The crystal deodorant never worked for me, and I got that nasty grazey rash after I'd used it a few times. It worked for DH, but he got the rash as well. Then I bought a 'vanilla'-scented natural deodorant which didn't work at all, and the 'vanilla' smelled not unlike stinky armpits. Not a great success. So I was about to sadly go back to regular, aluminium-laden deodorant when I bought some 'Pure and Natural' crystal roll-on deodorant. It's made by DSA, 'Deodorant Stones of America' (!), and I got it from a herbal shop. It works beautifully on me and DH, and has done for months now. Pricey-ish, but I'm hooked.

Is anyone so hygiene-obsessed that they've been following this thread from the beginning? 'Cuz my son is bugging me to give up MDC for Lent and I don't have time to read the whole thread to get an overview! Ooh! A poll might be in order (if someone knows enough about what's been recommended the most to list the most likely options.) What do you think?

I admit to usually using Lady Mitchum (with the aluminum.) I've tried baking soda and lotion (worked great but eventually caused a red rash), J/A/S/O/N (sticky and not that effective), Tom's of Maine (sticky, etc), and Kiss My Face (sticky, etc). The sticky underarm thing freaks me out. So far I haven't found a natural deoderant that works for me. However, I have been using Adidas Absorbant Deo (not natural, but no aluminum) lately. It works great and it doesn't make my underarms stick to my sides (although I can feel a little of the deo if I touch my underarms with my fingers.) It lasts for about 12 hours, so to stay smelling good, I have to put it on in the morning and before bed. The only thing I don't like about it is the strong scents. I'm using Fitness Fresh right now and it smells like Blue Raspberry Kool-Aid! That clashes with my vanilla perfume! I'd like to find a better smelling alternative that is made by a company that doesn't test on animals.

Lemongrass and orange oil smells really yummy! I can't wait to give her recipe a try. I've been desperately looking for a deodorant that rivals the original FUNK BUTTER deodorant; but so far the few deodorants that I've tried don't even come close.

Yeah, I'm definitely looking into laser hair removal-but for my underarms only. Someone posted on another thread that it will also reduce perspiration. Supposedly, once your hair is removed some of the sweat glands that produce sweat and odor become de-activated;therefore, the end result is less sweat and smell. I'm going to research this some more. Have you experienced this at all? I'll see if there is a thread already about laser hair removal; if not I'll start a new one.

TO: JoshuasMommy and Smokering
The crystal rock or stick deodorant can cause irritation due to the friction of rubbing the salt into your skin when applying. It happened to me a couple of times (I got red/purplish welts on my skin). I then switched over to the crystal roll-on deodorant , which is like a liquid gel, and the application was so much smoother and no more rashes! I highly recommend using the roll-on.
Grllsix yes I have noticed less sweat and odor lately. I did not atribute it to the laser treatments but it is possible. I have about 75% of the hair gone from my underarms and the skin appears smoother and the pores are smaller. I was very sweaty during my pregnacies and nothing seamed to work but now my underarms are much better. I am not sure if it is hormonal, the winter or the laser treatments. I did fine this week with plain coconut oil and working out for 1.5 hours and the next day with hazelnuts hommade funk butter and working out! So now I am done with secret deodorant and love the hommade funk butter!
