I have no idea if your ex could stop you...I doubt it though. My terminology is not great - but isn't there custody where you get to make all the decision, then their is custody where the children may live with you - but decisions about important things are made jointly? Which do you have?

Have you asked him how he feels about homeschooling? Do the boys want to be homeschooled? Is he a reasonable and open minded person in general?

So...I do not have much advice , mostly just wanted to lend support. Hang in there! (You could also cross post on the single mothers threads - I know you are not single, but i bet they have experience in dealing with exes)

I'm not 100% positive, but if you have Sole Custody (physical and legal) then he has no rights to stop you from homeschooling, you just have to keep him informed.
Good luck! Maybe a call to a lawyer would be in order?

You might want to post in the Ohio section of "Find Your Tribe" in this forum, too, to try to get the notice of some local areas moms who can point you in the correct direction.

I have no idea what the Ohio laws are. Good luck to you!

Well my ex and I are supposed to make all education choices together...but he doesnt pay child support and only see's the kids once a month so why should i go the extra mile to ask his opinion on homeschooling or unschooling...so i just did it and when i did tell him...he really didn't have anything to say...just make sure you have all the correct paper work filled that your state requires...

If you can finish out the year I would recommend that unless abuse of some sort is the issue. At this point you would still need to file a home school notification for these last five weeks, and then do some sort of evaluation(test, teacher review,or mutually agreed upon item with local super).Easier to remain in school and then do the notification during the summer prior to the start of next year.If money is not an issue the tests or teacher reviews are usually around $30-50.

For your x I would recommend doing testing the first year or 2.It might put him more at ease to see the kids scores. As long as you are following Ohio laws for hs he can do little. You would not need to prove to him or anyone else what you do every minute of the day. Keep him happy(so he won't try to stir up trouble),but don't go to extremes to please him.In the end it is you and the kids that need to be happy with the educational choices.

There is an ohio hs group at yahoo.

If you decide to use a charter school then your kids will still be considered public schoolers even though they learn at home.No need to file a hs notification if you go with them. They do the paperwork to tranfer your child into the charter(or out). BOSS,OCA, and OHDELA are popular ones.

Hi,

I have no idea about Ohio. Here in Colorado, the fighting in courts about
HSing can be intense and leverage points during the actual divorce and
custody -- usually financially motivated by an ex not wanting to support
someone who is HSing the children and not earning cash on their own.
The other time it gets contentious is in cases of alleged abuse. Neither
of those two describe you. So, if you were here, I wouldn't worry.

That said, give your state HS group a call and ask. You can also research
case histories or ask for them on state-wide discussion (think yahoo)
groups. I'd go there right away.

If ex is a decent person, he'll probably see happier, healthier kids and
be either pleased or at least resigned. Doing your homework is smart
and will make this all go smoother. Good luck & please post back to
tell us how it's going!!!

peace,
teastaigh
