If you could only keep 5 kitchen appliances

Hi:

I'm in serious decluttering, simplifying mode and wondering what others choices would be if you could only have 5 appliances in your kitchen. I use a lot of appliances regularly; they don't sit and only get used once a year so that's why I'd be curious what folks would pick.

Here are all my appliances:

I feel that if you really do use them enough to justify keeping (and you have the space for them), then keep them.

Personally I would get rid of the toaster. You can use your oven to toast things. Do you really need the rice cooker? Could you not just cook rice in a pot on the stove? Other than that just assess how much you use them to see if you really need them.

Interesting question! I've been thinking about this very thing b/c we are considering an overseas move and will seriously need to pare down if we go...I'll be watching to see what others pick! I think I would pick:

-The KA mixer
-rice cooker
-toaster
-crock pot
-food processor (if it's large enough to do any "blending" type jobs for you, otherwise probably the vitamix blender)

I think that pp are right, though, if you honestly use them all the time most of them are worth keeping. I am a firm believer in my rice cooker, and ditto the crock pot, with a busy toddler who usually won't let me cook uninterrupted that thing is a lifesaver. You could definitely probably pare down the "blending" type items, and I am getting ready to get rid of our coffee pot, we have a large french press we use almost exclusively.

crock pot

I'd be willing to go without the rice cooker, but dh loves it, and it does do a wonderful job.

This is what we have - 6 items (and ours is a toaster oven, not just a toaster) - if I needed to lose one it would depend on what you use more. We use the rice cooker a lot but the juicer only about once a month, so it would likely be the one to go.

I go back and forth on the rice cooker but boy it makes great rice, and I still haven't figured out good rice making in our altitude.

steamer (which I use for rice also)

dh would insist on the coffee maker though and I really like my juicer

I personally don't have a set number I can 'have' appliance wise. Instead, they have to fit in a designated storage area when not in use. So for right now, I've got a blender, kitchen aid mixer, and deep fryer on my counter, and all the crockpots (I have 3), asst other 'stuff' - like hot air popper, etc. Can't remember what all I have right now, lol. I have a microwave cart that has 2 cabinet doors on it and that's where everything is stored. Since I seem to go in seasons on what is out on counter (except kitchenaid - that stays out ALL the time - I use it a minimum of 3x week) it works for me.

I'd keep the Kitchen Aid, food processor, blender, crock pot and waffle maker because these are the ones we use often. I have a few french press coffee makers, though, or I would have had to keep a coffee maker on the list too.

I think you should keep them since you use them regularly, especially if you have space for them all to be kept out of the way and if you enjoy using them. You could try putting a couple of them up high/someplace inconvenient for a couple months and see if you miss them or not, and if you don't, get rid of them.

I love decluttering, but it can be hard to walk the line of simplifying as much as possible and regretting what you get rid of. My personal goal is to keep the stuff I really love and enjoy and get rid of the stuff that keeps me from enjoying my space.

I have all of the appliances you have except one. I make every single meal we eat here at home from scratch. These appliances keep me from being in the kitchen all day (although even with them, I am in there a lot). But, if I were forced to choose five, I'd keep my standmixer, food processor, electric kettle, rice cooker and toaster. Those things make my life a lot easier but then again, so do all my gadgets.

Ok, you left out the big ones. I was wondering how you'd cut down to 5!

*I* would want to keep our toaster, coffee pot, hot water kettle & crockpot. DH would "need" to keep our deep fryer. I have a love/hate relationship with the thing. It was a gift to us, otherwise we wouldn't have one.

If I had to downsize my kitchen clutter collection, I'd choose:

-Electric kettle
-Toaster oven
-Raclette grill (we love it, and use it all the time)
-Stove
-Fridge

I'm actually having a hard time thinking of things I'd keep!

We've gone through 2 mixers since we've been together, and I nearly picked up a manual hand mixer (the old fashioned kind) when we were out at a specialty kitchen store yesterday. For how often we use it, I'd be happy with that.

We've gone through 3 coffee makers since we've been together. And we recently started drinking instant, when we want it, so we can use the kettle for that.

I hate my microwave. The only thing we ever use it for is de-frosting leftover spaghetti sauce.

The toaster - or crumb creator - could get the boot. I hate it, too.

I have a crock pot, but have never used it. Not once.
