The controversial research aims to supplement baby milk with a hormone that suppresses hunger.

Animal studies suggest early exposure to the hormone leptin can programme the brain to prevent over-eating throughout life.

But fears have been raised about the safety of tampering with the brains of babies in such a fundamental way.

The infant formula, together with other "child-friendly" leptin preparations, is being developed by Professor Mike Cawthorne, director of metabolic research at the Clore Laboratory, University of Buckingham.

Now seriously, why not encourage BFing more?? Wouldn't that be better??

as a former anorexic, I will say that is downright scary!! Our society is WAY too thin-obsessed and this idea will turn into something awful VERY quickly.....

That's insane - fake hormones for infants to suppress their appetites? It's interesting to see the formula industry respond to the fact that their product is linked to future obesity, by creating an even more synthetic and potentially dangerous product.

Let's hear it for breastmilk... plain ole' breastmilk. I think I'm going to start telling people I feed my little ds 'organic' milk.

OH MY GOD. Seriously?? I'm a formula supplementing, low supply, BFAR mama and this really pisses me off. It's hard enough to figure out what's the lesser of all the formula evils, now I might have to add THIS crap to my list of additives to avoid? Sheeeesh.

I love how in the article they keep talking about how much better breastmilk is than formula but no one mentions trying to get people just to switch to breastmilk? What !%@#$&?*#

the mother received the leptin! they studied lactating female rats with artificially higher leptin levels and came to the conclusion that human babies who are artificially fed with leptin-added formula won't have obesity... :

as far as i understood, the rat babies were breastfed (and ate different kinds of complementary food). or did i get it wrong?
