Is it thrush? (updated w/pic especially for doudat!)

My baby has some curdy white stuff on the back of his tongue and I'm wondering what to do about it (if anything). I tried wiping it off but nearly made him throw up. He's still nursing good and my nipples might hurt a little more but they're not red or anything. He has no diaper rash and no spots anywhere other than his tongue. Should I just take some acidophillis or is greater action needed?

acidophilus won't hurt and certainly might help

thrush will not wipe off easily - but I see how it's hard to tell when it's that far back

thrush on your nipples would likely make them brighter pink and maybe some shooting pains

I was wondering the same thing yesterday. My baby has a white area toward the back of the tongue, that does not wipe off. No other patches. i had my midwife take a peek and she said it did not look like thrush but to keep an eye on it. She said it wouldnt hurt to eat some extra yogurt or take acidophilus.

I have the same thing with my baby. I went to the breastfeeding clinic monday to get her tongue-tie clipped and the doc that was there confirmed it was thrush (he scratched it would a wooden spatula, it didn't come off). He said it did not need treatment unless I had symptoms as well as it will probably go away on its own. If I do develop pain (he said it felt like shards of glass) that gets worst throughout a feeding, not the other way around, then I'd have to do the gentian violet treatment. So once a day at night for 3-4 days, put gentian violet on nipple and let baby nurse. That should clear it up.

Yeah, books and websites describe that pain too, I think I would like to AVOID ever feeling that if possible !

OT-doudat, how is your family?

I know what you mean, I told the doc the exact same thing. He just stared at me. Men
He said I could do the gentian violet just in case. I might. But I have to wait a few days anyways cause the gentian violet is antiseptic and will burn the baby (cause of the tongue-tie).

And the family is doing good, we're adjusting well, Liam is bored but comfortable, which is all that counts! Thanks for asking

When I had thrush with my 3rd DS I used grapefruit seed extract with great results too...Just thought I would throw that in there.

I think this is a good option since it seems to be getting worse. Do you remember what dosage you used?

Let me see if I can find the info for it...I think I saved it somewhere. I know with the tabs (I did the tablets and the liquid because I had it bad) I took 2 tablets a day and then I used the extract and it was so many drops in 8 ozs of bottled water and then I used a cotton swab to put it on my nipples and in my son's mouth. Anyway let me look it up and I will post the link when I find it.

This is getting awful! My poor sweet happy baby is upset all the time! I've been up all night crying and comfort nursing, which is the only time he'll stop fussing. At one point I thought he stopped breathing because he wasn't moaning and shaking his tiny hands. While nursing, he won't get a proper latch and he can't do side-lying anymore. We've been wiping his mouth and my nipples with GSE and I've been taking acidolfilis every 4 hours. I'm also doing a yeast elimination diet which leaves me eating pretty much only brown rice I'll do anything to make what seemed like nothing 2 days ago leave my little one alone! My husband's at the store right now getting the prescription for drugs filled.

Did you try the Gentian Violet? It's the protocol here in Montreal's hospital-based breastfeeding clinic. It's supposed to clear out in 3 days...

Hugs Hanno.. we have been fighting thrush for 2.5 weeks now.
Its still not gone.
We got mastitis because of it as well.. and your right it makes the baby fussy as anything.

We can't find anywhere that sells it! We've been to 3 pharmacies and 2 healthfood stores. I may just order it online with express shipping.

Do it! It's messy and gross, but yeast is now resistant to a lot of medications, which makes it harder to clear up. So this normally works well.

He's MUCH more comfortable now! Thank you

He's still grumbly but we think that's just the way he expresses himself. The pain deep in my breast is nearly gone too.
