How do you organize/store your children's clothes?

I am thinking about swtiching my clothes storage system and wondering if anyone had any input. ( I have 2 boys and a 3rd on the way, so I only have boys' clothes)

Currently, I have everything stored by age - so 3-6 mos. in a bin with a ziploc bag for each clothing type - pants, shirt, sleepers, etc.

However, my boys seem to grow out of their shirts before their pants, so I always have ultiple sizes of clothes out at a time. I am thinking about re-organizing my bins by clothing type - so "Pants" and then in the ziplocs, organize them by size. Does anyone use a method like this? A better one? What works for you? Thanks!

(By the way, I do not have a lot of time on my hands! I'm just going crazy with all the piles of clothing waiting to come or go from their bins!)

I have 3 girls so kind of the same situation

I put my clothes together by size, all in one box. I keep things they wore together in the same box regardless of what the tag says. I have shirts that say 9 - 12m in with my 3 - 6m clothes, because they are the same size as most 3 - 6 stuff. I keep teh winter stuff together (since there isn't so much of it and I never know what size will fit) and I also have a box of "too big" At the beginning of the season I go through the boxes and bring down anything I think will fit. At the end of the season I sort by size.

We have 2 boys very close in size and this is my storage system for them on a perfect day if everything was put away properly, and it actually does happen, most of the time

shirts go on green hangers for the big one
blue hangers for the little one
(this is great for hubby who has no clue!)

pants get stacked 4 piles on a shelf in there, a good and play for each, just now pulling out the shorts so will make another pile each for them and probably put away some of the big pants and give away the smaller sizes

Also a 6 drawer dresser filled
1. socks in a universal drawer for either, I do have to hunt sometimes the little one can wear the big ones but not vise versa plus I'm not real good about matching up when they come in from the line
2. underware, same problem here the little ones don't fit the big son so am always hunting and the little one isn't quite in underware yet, sometimes, but I want them accessable when he wants to wear them
3. hat drawer (LOTS of sun hats!)
4 5 and 6 hanging on to until they fit, and what seasonal out of closet that will fit.

I hated hanging little tiny clothes so for them when they were in that size the 6 drawer dresser had small size on one side and large size on the other,
1. shirts,
2. pants/shorts,
3. all in 1 outfits or nice clothes that went together.
socks were kept in a basket ontop of the dresser or on the floor

I have a similar system and it seems to work close enough. I have rubbermaid totes in the attic and keep things seperated by gender (girls and then mixed gender becuase I can dress my girl like a boy but can't dress my boy like a girl!) and then they are divided roughly by age, 0-3M 3-6M 6-8M 9-12M 12-18M ect. I ballpark it. If they were wearing it around a year I put it in that bin, if they outgrew it at 18 months, I put it back by the 12 month stuff, becuase I rather find it early next time round instead of too late. I go through clothes 2x a year and pull out the outgrown stuff. If I find they have outgrown in before then, I have crates at the top of the attic stairs where they accumulate until the crates are full, then I put 'em where they belong. I also use a number system, each tote is numbered and at the base of the attic I have a sheet that tells me the content of each numbered box. So if I empty out #5 with the 2T clothes for a year, I can use that tote for something else, and just changed my piece of paper that tells me what's in it. It really works well.
