I'm wondering how many people with allergies to cow's milk protein are able to tolerate butter? The package I have says 0g protein per serving, but I imagine there may be trace amounts (or more).

Most people can't tolerate it. It's very very rare, and when it does happen, it's clarified butter (ghee), not regular, that they can tolerate.

What Wendy said. If you decide to try ghee, make sure it's the factory produced one, not the one made at home. Even then it may have traces of protein in it.

oops- i meant to say-- if its just dairy you're avoiding, earth balance makes a great trans-fat free vegan margarine-- it does have soy, though.

We did kinesiology with my dd, she has problems with all dairy except butter. It blows my mind, but so far no problems with butter.

Thanks for the replies.. I knew I shouldn't get my hopes up!
I'm sure I'm not getting enough fat. I just couldn't keep my eyes off the butter dish at dinner last night. I'm avoiding dairy, soy, and nuts; supplimenting with flax, evening primrose, and cod liver oil; eating olive oil and avacados. I know some people eat lots of coconut oil on elimination diets, but the only coconut oil I could find at the co-op was the hard, refined kind.

Anyone found a margarine w/o soy??

Fleischmanns light margarine. http://www.fleischmanns.com/products/light.jsp
it makes a great topping for bread, potatoes, etc. but for baking I find that palm shortening works better. The fleischmanns tends to separate.
