I voted for student on hold, but I guess you could call me an active student now, just barely.

I did a year of didacic training and 6 months of apprenticeship before i left to give birth and be with my twin babies.

They're 2 now, and so i've just enrolled in AAMI and am slowly dipping my toes back in, though i have no plans to apprentice anytime soon.

I'm taking the slow road, and i'm ok with that.

I replied mw in partnership practice- I have been practicing mw for 25 years- although not very active for many of the middle years when homeschooling 4 kids- I can only do about one labor intensive job at a time - not quite on hold but just a few births a year-- and although I am in partnership- techinically apprenticeship for the last 5 years getting my numbers in for a state license. --- I have an absolute preference for partnership and that is basically how I have always practiced- I cannot even imagine being a solo provider

I am a student midwife here in Canada, it is a four year half-academic half-practicum program which ends up with me being a publically-funded primary care provider. I am in the beginning of my third year, caught a few babies this winter. Definitely gave me the energy to keep going (I found the academics really exhausting). Nice to meet you all!!

texaspeach:
I just found out that Frontier Nursing Service (CNEP) has opened the program to AD nurses. They have admitted their second class of ADN to MSN/CNM students. So glad to hear this because it's a distance learing program and I always thought having to get a BSN to enter an CNM program was silly.

This may save you a bit of school.

Kitty Ernst is very concerned that we are at the tipping point where midwives will become the primary maternity care providers for pregnant women, but there may not be enough midwives to meet the need. Like the nursing schools, CNEP is looking for creative ways to help people become midwives.

Sorry, totally hijacked that thread. Back to our regularly scheduled program.

I voted student on hold. I apprenticed for about five months and was about to pay for admission to MSTM when I found out I was pregnant. I continued to apprentice until I was about 22 weeks and then due to some pregnancy complications I decided to take a break and probably will not resume until babe is at least 18 months.

Frontier School of nursing is where I want to complete my CNM. however, I would love to know where kitty ernst is getting her info about midwives becoming PCP. Because all the midwives and organizations that I've heard say things are going the opposite way. I know, in my area, we have lost most of the midwives, the others are primarily doing well woman care, not even delivering anymore. And forget about getting a doctor to back you up for homebirths.

that's the primary reason i decided not to do it for now and just concentrate ongetting my CPM.

But if things are tipping and there's evidence to that effect, i wanna know about it!!!!! I'd be thrilled beyond belief!

I voted in as midwife in solo practice, with my CNM from CNEP in 1994, attending moms at home here in WA state. I have an assistant who very much wants to apprentice, but has little ones. We are just keeping track of her visits for later, so she'll have a bit of a head start on her numbers when she's ready.

I am a student on very extended hold. I did an apprenticeship in Texas for almost a year back in 2001. I was about to enroll in a distance learning course when we moved to Germany. I decided not to enroll in a course for some reason - I guess with the move and all it was just too much. We are leaving Germany within the next year and I hope to live in a country that I can resume my studies and someday be a midwife. In the meantime I am enrolled in a doula course.

I am looking at schools now, trying to decide btwn CPM and CNM. Also, the laws in ND worry me so we may move when I finish school.

I chose student on hold because I am not actively apprenticing or enrolled in courses, but my doula work is helping me add births to my resume which will ulitmately help me get liscensed. So, I guess I am only partially on hold. I will take my last two courses in the fall. A major custody battle had forced me into a day job about a year ago. But, the end is finally in sight so that I can get my studies back on track.

I started studying with AAMI back in 1997... but it was interrupted by several moves, a couple babies, and hubby's health problems. I am back at it now, and have upgraded to the newest version of the curriculum, so it is almost like starting over. No apprenticeship plans at present... my youngest is just too little and she needs me. At least I won't have to worry about childcare when I do have an apprenticeship... my oldest turns 16 this month. Wow... where did the time go??????

I've been in a solo practice for about 30 years and have been fortunate to have had several wonderful apprentices over the years. I do live in a small community, however and simply cannot apprentice all who would like to work with us. Maybe that will change, someday. The world needs all the midwives we can get!!

I'm a student midwife, halfway through my second year (almost!) of a Bachelor's in Midwifery in Aotearoa/New Zealand. I am Canadian, and plan on returning there when I am finished to complete the IMPP process and become a registered midwife in my home province. I am determined to make my practice as diverse, woman-centered and home-birthed focused as possible 'within the system' because I strongly believe in free access for all.

Right now I am 19 weeks pregnant and planning on spending a year at home after this semester ends, doing some classes by correspondance before returning in 2008 w/ babe in tow to finish my final placement :

Oh, and I've caught 3 babies in the past couple weeks!

I'm an associate midwives in a partnership practice. I've been practising for 2 years and am opening a new, smaller practice in the fall (then I get to be a partner ). We are funded publicly here and regulated as well.

I consider myself a student midwife and I do a lot of self-study, but I'm not officially one yet. I am working on my bachelor's degrees in Women's Studies and English and I hope to go to grad school in 2009 to be a CNM. I'm applying to graduate-entry programs that don't require a BSN, as nursing school is not practical at this point in my life and I don't want to do four years of nursing school PLUS a year or two of working PLUS three years of CNM school before I can catch babies.

I am "on hold". I apprenticed for one year with my local midwife and then did a three month intership in Texas. I've been to about 150 births and caught 56 babies. I've been on hold for four years now while I had two more kids. I am thinking of getting back in the game soon.

student mw in WA state, taking the path less traveled, spent 2 years studying with a mw turned educator, trying to balance birthwork with raising my 4 children. Wanting to do the PIP/NARM model, have my paperwork now need to find an apprentice. I am needing some advice on how to approach and ask such mw to take me on? Any words of wisdom from those of you who have done this? I feel confident in my book knowledge just need to start the hands on...(or off!) work.

I said midwife in solo practice, but I'm "semi-retired". Only going to a few births a year since my son was born.
