Ds's idea of "junk food"

So yesterday afternoon, the boys and I were watching PBS kids. It ended and the next program was to be "A Place of Our Own." Before the program started, they had a comercial for "First 5" where a little boys is shown sitting at various tables during the day being served junk food - donuts, cookies, soda, etc. So, ds#1 (almost 6) looks at me and says, "I want donuts, cookies, gatorade, pasteurized milk ... " He then continues to mentioned a few other things, all of which are preceeded by "pasteurized" and is giggling the whole time. Aww ... he makes my heart melt, throwing pasteurized products in there with junk food! Just thought I'd share on the one board where someone else might "get" it.

I think it's kind of cool that a child his age knows 'pasteurization' and what it means!

The other day at the park, he and his best friend (7) were talking about how cool it would be if candy fell from the sky () a la the picture book "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs". I gave ds a sideways look of, "Candy, really?!", so ds followed the candy with, "And then raw milk." His bf said, "I don't like raw milk." Ds informed him that raw milk tastes better than the other milk and that it wasn't pasteurized. He loves throwing that word around!

Pasteurization is touted as being more "healthy" because it is supposed to kill any harmful bacteria present. In the case of milk, in particular, it also kills any of the good stuff - probiotics, enzymes, vitamins - rendering the milk pretty much "dead." Here is an article regarding "real milk" versus pasteurized milk. Granted, I would not drink raw milk from a feed-lot, conventional dairy where cows are grain fed, stand in their own feces, and don't see the light of day. I do drink (and we only drink) raw milk from grass-fed cows grazing on organic pastures. Here is the site for the milk we buy.

For my family, the same is true for pasteurized versus "raw" juices. We buy pasteurized juice from the HFS for the kids ... they do not drink anything other than raw milk or filtered water, except for one glass of juice a day if they wish. It is their equivalent of a "treat" like other kids might get a soda or something. We do occassionally buy raw apple cider from the farmer's market; we also make our own raw juice with our juicer. But, living on pasteurized products, in my opinion, only leads to malnurishment and eventual disease ... pasteurization (and irradiation) kills the essential living nutrients inherent in food. Unfortunately our food supply is so messed up (for instance how cows/steer are raised) that they developed pasteurization to make up for the dirty, disease infested dairies instead of requiring the dairies to clean up their act.

Sorry this is a bit jumbled; I keep getting interrupted by said child above and his 3 1/2 year old brother.
