National Allergy. I buy all my encasings and replacement filters there. No financial interest, just an extremely satisfied customer for almost a decade. Wonderful CS and a decent selection.

You can buy some decent air filtration units at Sears, Kohl's, etc.

Avoid ionizers and ozone generators.

We have an air cleaner installed for the whole house, and the "Dust Pans," but I also purchased "Boss" HEPA vacuume with replacement bags to keep the indoor air cleaner while I vacuum.

It is small and light weight, so I can carry to the 2f, basement and do stairs, window/door frames. It works fine for me, since I have no carpet in the house. I have some area rugs of wool or cotton. It comes with "Bear claws" that works well on the wool rugs.

greencat, can you tell me more about your whole house air cleaner?

We have carpeting upstairs, unfortunately. When we moved here I wanted to rip it up, but there is only nasty vinyl underneath (no hardwood). Someday when we have $ I will get the wood flooring! At least downstairs it is hardwood with just a few area rugs.

We've had two: One in our old house, and a different one in our current house. One was the air cleaner with inch thick filter. I think the price of each filter for it was $45. You suppose to change the filter every year, but I changed it every 6mo. Some recommends getting a system that requires a thinner, cheaper filter and change it every month, but I was more comfortable with the thicker one, every 6mo. Our current one is also an air exchanger, and I like this one since I can set the intervals of air exchange according to the season, etc. We also change the filter every 6mo. We also have the humidifier for the whole house. I will not have the portable humidifier since I would be concerned about the mold growth.

Beside all the equipments, my first recommendation is to get a lot of house plants. And open your windows everyday. I highly recommend reading the book "How to Grow Fresh Air." Especially, if you have the 'brown thumbs' like me.

You can also improve your air quality by getting the synthetic materials out(PVC, VOC) and start using natural materials for cleaning your house.

If you have an extra money, I really would take the carpet out, and change the drapes to cotton or silk curtains.

Thanks, greencat. I looked in the basement and apparently we have a whole-house air cleaner but it needs a new filter.

I'd love to get that carpet out-- but it would be several 1000s to get a new floor installed, which we don't have. Sigh. All of this allergy stuff is so expensive. We never had allergies in my family so this is a whole new world to me.

No drapes here, thankfully-- we have wood blinds, but I am trying to find a good way to dust them faster so I can do it more often.

I spoke of my favorite vacuume on the different post, but I have a vacuume, "Boss" from Eureka with HEPA filter. It is poweful, light weight, small and perfect to vac window frame, door frame, blinds, stairs and book shelves as you carry it. It comes with a "bear claw" that works ok on my wool area rugs. It is probably too small for large room with carpet, though. I
