I'm facing this problem myself . I'm currently using ones we bought ages ago but I don't want to buy more when they run out. We usually don't line the cans anyway but we have one of those holders for the bags in the kitchen under the sink.

I've been thinking about this too, as we re-use plastic grocery bags for our garbage. I even have a little contraption under my sink that was designed for this purpose.
What if *once and a while* we get paper grocery bags, use them to corral trash inside the house, and line only the actual garbage can that goes out to the street with one of those big black bags. Or I suppose you may not even have to line it at all- I'm not sure. Then when the paper grocery bag gets full, we can dump the contents into the garbage can (if the paper bag gets gross or tears we can put it in the recycling). Still sends plastic into the landfill, but probably less of it than if we use a whole bunch of little plastic bags.
Feel free to offer feedback....just what I've been brainstorming lately.

Most of our garbage cans don't have bags in them, but they need something. I don't want to wash them.lol There are 2 stores I shop at where they bag my groceries so when we're getting low on grocery bags I let them bag mine.

For our kitchen garbage can(3 times the size as the others) I use bags that are 94% made out of recycled materials.

For our can outside I use contractor bags. I am not hauling the garbage can to the curb because most days I"d have to chase it down the street to get it back and in the winter(which is 5-6 months here) I'd never get it to the street with all the snow.

we have a metal can in the bathroom (~$10 from BB&B) and don't use bags. Dh often tosses his breakfast drink can in it so I usually rinse it out in the tub (dump the water down the toilet)

I have a ~13 gal. trash can in the kitchen that uses a "kitchen" size bag.

I dump the bathroom bag into the kitchen bag. Living in an apartment I can just dump the trash in the dumpster as needed.

what do you do about cat garbage?our cat has her own room (sort of ) and we dump her meat plates in that trash as well as her litter clumps...

I am still using up plastic grocery bags that we've accumulated for cat litter waste, but I have some biodegradeable, compostable bags that I'll be using instead. I got them from drugstore.com. The brand is BioBag. They make pet waste bags as well as lawn and leaf (33gal), kitchen (13gal) and food waste (3gal) bags.

We don't have a liner in the kitchen garbage can or the bathroom one.

We just use the little plastic bags and tie them up and drop them in the dumpster when they need to be.

I buy seventh generation garbage bags at a HFS & I use metal garbage cans. I would just throw trash into our big cans outside, but our garbage ppl won't pick up the can and dump it, they just grab bags. I tried just putting it in the can and it sat there almost a week and then I had to go dump it into a garbage back so it would get taken away. :

My mom saves hers for me. I figure, if I'm getting them from someone who isn't going to make the switch to cloth grocery bags anyway, there's no loss. She would just have thrown them in the recycling bin at the store anyway.
