DH and I are paying out of pocket for a home waterbirth. He's in the military, so would Tricare still cover the newborn, even though it wasn't delivered in a hospital? Thank you!

This comes from my experience working in healthcare for almost 10 years:

as long as you apply for a birth certificate and social security number, it doesn't matter if the baby is born at home, in a hospital or in a taxicab by the side of the road. Once you give birth, there should be a paper you fill out or a number you call to notify the insurance company (within 30 days of birth) that the child was born and they are added to your policy. Then, once you get the SS#, they'll want that info too.

Call your insurance company customer service number (should be on the back of your Tricare card) and ask them if you have to fill out a paper or just call after the baby is born.

HTH!

yes, they absolutely will. i think the first 30 or 90 days the baby is covered without regstration, and you use your insurance card.

they may also pay for your homebirth, or atleast part of it. in my state (ny) midwifery care has to be covered the same as ob care, and if insurance doesnt have providers for the service you require (in this case HB) they have to pay for an out of network provider. they paid $1400 for my two homebirths, and the standard ($200?) for each visit. i have paper work in to get reimbursed for the remainder.

i dont know where you are, or if CNMs attend HB in your area, but if you switch to standard tricare should pay the out of network rate for a CNM attended HB. and i'm pretty sure if you harrass them enough they'll cover anything.

Yes, they will...the baby will be born somewhere (just think if you were planning a hospital birth & didn't make it to the hospital, the baby would have been born in the car. etc ...) so I wouldn't worry about it.

Yep, just get the baby registered in DEERS as soon as possible. They are automatically Tricare Prime for the first 30 or 60 days I forget which, they keep changing it....it was 120 days when I had my ds but I know they've shortened it considerably since having him.

Also Tricare covers hb with a CNM so you might want to check into that. No point in paying out of pocket if you don't have to.
