Have you taken your newborn to the Dr?

Just wondering how many folks have taken their newborn to the Dr. We see our midwife at 2 weeks and 6 weeks. As long as we don't have any issues our babe won't see a Dr. until after that.

A lot of folks keep asking about this. Am I the only one that is holding off?

We went in at ~10 days and then about 2 weeks later. The office is usually not busy, and we are just meeting the Drs. I switched DD1 there too. We have an OB, so there was no one else to check DD2 and I did want to get the PKU testing. I also got a referral for a hearing check. We will go back in a month or so, but I am not looking forward to the "no vaxing discussion we will have with the doctor (we have an HMO, so I don't think they are used to people not vaxing).

We took him in for a few reasons:
-we wanted to have his hypospadias checked out
I was exposed to a medication while I was pregnant and caring for my husband's grandfather that has a possible side effect of hypospadias in babies. Lo and behold, our boy was born with a mild case. It looks sorta like he's been circumcised (which is emotionally frustrating for me because I'm so opposed to the procedure). We were referred to a urologist who confirmed that no action needed to be taken. We do have a file with the drug company in case anything else comes up at puberty.
-We wanted to know what he weighs (only ever lost 2 oz since birth and is now gaining good.
-Our MW doesn't do a 2 week, only a 6.
-Our Dr is a DO so we weren't worried about him pushing things we aren't comfortable with. He didn't bat an eye about not vaxing or homebirthing. He also is teaching us some cranial massage techniques to ease the baby's discomfort.
- We didn't have to go in, but we called him for prescriptions for thrush.

DS saw the ped at 3 days, 4 days and 3 weeks. He goes back a 2 months. I don't mind seeing the ped, he's really AP and gets almost giddy to see a baby who's BF, not circ'd, etc

yeah my midwife like you to see one with in 72 hrs of birth so we saw her monday.
we see a nurse practitioner that is in private practice, i really like her!

At one week we took her in. Only because at the hospital they called him & told him she was here. (Huge mix up at hospital. I do not use pediatricians, & they did not know what to do!). He said all is good, see ya in 2 months. Yeah, maybe.

We've been there twice and won't need to go again until 2 months.

There's no way we're going unless something is wrong. We have Kaiser right now, so it would mean sitting in the Kaiser waiting room with a bunch of sick kids after waiting in 2 lines to see someone who doesn't know us from jack to try and talk us into stuff we don't want and tell us what we already know . But if we need one, we'll see one anyway.

I honestly hadn't planned on going. I thought about just keeping him at home and holding off on the vaccinations - only going if he is sick. BUT, he started having these pink diapers and it concerned me so we took him. Ped just shrugged it off so I probably should have just kept him at home. The ped didn't impress me at all either so I'm not sure that I'll keep the 2 month appt - might find another one - or skip it entirely. Is there really much that a well-baby check is going to tell me that I can't check for myself?

We went a few hours after she was born, and then a couple days later to get the heel prick test done. Nothing since and nothing planned

We haven't yet. We have a family doctor that we have been seeing for over 20 years. We may go in just for an intro and to say hi.

NOPE! We did a few of the well baby checks with DS#1, then realized they weren't for us! DS#2 and DD have never been for a well check, they have no reason to. THe well checks were put into place in order to keep the child on schedule for vax's and since we don't....it was more a PITA than anything else. I would take them if I thought there was an issue.

nak

Just went today. They were shocked at how big Jorie is, and even more shocked that we had her at home. I could tell they thought we were weirdos. Guess I will be looking for a new ped. We are peaceful people but I was worked up by the time we left the dr office. the ped is provax and started to lecture me on our choice to delay vaccines.
On a good note jorie is almost 12lbs. She is completely off the charts. I just keep thinking about how babies are suppose to double their birth wt by 6 mo. That means Jorie would be about 23lbs--- that is so crazy dd1 is 26 lbs and she is two :

That really IS impressive! I'm in awe of her coming out unable to fit into the newborn clothing that's still too big on mine!

Not yet, and nothing planned. I think I'll just wait and see if he gets sick later on. If he does. We have never had to take my daughter in for an illness, and stopped her well-baby check ups at 9 months. She's 3 now, and still alive

I've read some places that they should double it by 4-5.

He was born in the hospital so he had newborn exams the three mornings we were there by the ped doing rounds.

We took him back to the hospital at two weeks for the 2nd PKU but just to the lab.

No WBC yet and none planned though I do need to find a ped I like just to have someone "in case"

My 2 year old didn't see a ped until 16 months when I had a concern about a possible hernia and I honestly regret taking him as it was a nightmare and he hasn't been back since then.

We re lucky tharound lunch time so there is an even smaller chance of no kidsat our Kaiser office is small, so there is rarely more that 2 other kids. Also, I schudule around lunchtime, so there is an even smaller chance of kids being there. We still haven't decided if we will go to the 2 mo appt.

Thanks ladies!

DH and I don't feel the need to take him in. He isn't sick, we can tell he is actively gaining weight, he eats well and sleeps well. He has a little bit of baby acne but his dad has super sensitive skin so I'm not worried. Dr.'s are for sick people...he's not sick
