Caroline Mae’s Birth Story
4/27/07 4:30 am after 1 hour and 30 minutes of labor.

This week started off with a sad note, My midwife Evelyn’s birth assistant died in a motorcycle accident, and her memorial service was being held at 11 am on Friday. I was so scared of making the midwife miss her friend and partners service.
I do think Lora would of loved that we started the day so many remembered her that a baby was born.

I woke up Thursday at 2 am and noticed I was having little contractions that hurt but weren’t bad, about every 15 minutes I could sleep thru them, I had to get up and have a bowel movement 2 times so I knew things where getting ready. I got up at 7 am to get my daughters ready for school, I took a shower and things slowed down, I had contractions thru the day but nothing close enough or painful enough to call my husband David home from work, though I was looking forward to him coming home early like he told me he was going to do, ended up he couldn’t and worked till about 5pm, I watched tv and had some contractions about 15 minutes to 30 minutes apart again nothing painful but did have another bowel movement. Around 10 30 pm I checked my cervix and couldn’t really feel it but could tell it was totally effaced then like 30 minutes later I have some bloody show ! I went to bed about 11 30, and was up with more contractions by one am, I tried to sleep thru them and couldn’t so I started doing some things since I new she was coming today even though contractions were still 10 minutes apart so I thought I was still in early labor. I had to pee a bunch then at 2:30 am the got painful and I needed David to wake up, he made me call my mw which I was putting off because I didn’t think I was in active labor since contractions weren’t 5 minutes apart (though they really were) I called Evelyn my midwife at 3 am, and she said she was on her way. I had Dave make the bed and start filling the pool and I called my friend Jessica between contractions. Things got really close and intense about then, I couldn’t find away to cope with the pain. I was in the hall way with David and had a little gush, I wasn’t sure if it was my water or not, I went to the bathroom and peed and cleaned up had another contraction, and Jessica walked in at about 3:45 I had David call my parents to come I think I had a few contractions and wanted to get in the pool I didn’t know how else to deal with the pain (I had 3 previous water births and was in the water at this point with them) but the pool wasn’t warm enough or high enough to get in yet so Jessica suggested some things to do but I knew they wouldn’t help, she asked me to get on the bed at first I was like no and thought to my self it would hurt more, but then I had to lay down. I was on my side and Jessica and Dave right there with me, I tried to push a little to see if it felt better, it didn’t really and then Jessica asked if I was pushing and I said I tried to see if it felt better but it didn’t (I felt like I shouldn’t since Evelyn wasn’t here yet, and I didn’t think I was dilated enough since I had just started labor) the very next contraction I told them Oh no I Have to push and felt her Head coming down , I started pushing, Dave was trying to find Evelyn’s number to call her and trying to find things in the birth kit, Jessica was asking for gloves I think I said No time just catch, and out came Caroline Mae at exactly 4 am. We put baby on my chest, she had the cord all over her little body so we unwrapped her.
We left the cord alone and waited on the placenta, I tried nursing but she wasn’t ready. Evelyn walked in at 4:18 and started checking on us and helped me deliver the placenta a few minutes later. We sat in bed about 2 hrs, at some time Shannon (the birth assistant) arrived and helped Evelyn, (I hadn’t met Shannon since she was back up) around 6 I went to the bathroom and cleaned up.
At some point we had gotten our daughters up to meet the baby, Elizabeth watched them cut the cord ( she had wanted to but I thin was to scared/ sleepy so daddy did it instead) Hailey was glued to us watching everything) after I was cleaned up we woke up our son Sam and he met his baby sister too. Caroline Weighted 7lbs 4 oz ( everyone thought she was 8 lbs I knew she was going to be my smallest.) And 20 inches long, was nursing with in 30 minutes of birth☺
