NE mamas - is it spring yet?

It smells like spring is in the air! But I'm afraid to trust it. I've never planted yet this early (in NY) - what do you think? Is it here to stay - or do we have another cold snap waiting to come through?

I'm in PA, but I would definitely say there are quite a few more cold snaps to come. I think our last frost date is early May, but of course you can direct sow cool season crops, vegies, perennials weeks before that. We've been getting springy weather, too, but then it snows again a few days later!

I also live in PA and I can assure you that these warm days are a mere temptation to plant tender little plants.

They will freeze I assure you!!!

I have some crocouses popping their heads out of the cold soil and I have daffies with buds just ready to bloom.

I planted snowdrops in the fall but, alas, I think they fell victim to the ongoing drought.

'Can't wait until spring finally arrives for real!!

Hi, I'm in Long Island too. I've never planted quite this early- usually wait until the end of March. It sure is tempting, though. Today is pretty chilly, I wish I were in the warm sun in the garden.............Danielle

I'm pining for the garden here in Boston. I want to plant but I'm sure we've got a lot of cold days ahead. I went to Home Depot over the weekend and bought new gro-lites for my organic seeds. I'll be starting them and dreaming of my veggie garden for the next few months I'm afraid.

It definitely SMELLS like spring here in Maine, but from experience I know to only start my seeds indoors when it starts smelling like this. I won't even remove the 'blankets' off my perennials from last year yet, even though I see little shoots poking through.

Start some seeds indoors to take care of your 'grow lust'

I'm in coastal NJ and I'd say that you ****might***** be able to get away with planting some cool season seeds as long as you can cover them if it gets too cold. The last few nights have been at frost temps here, but it is about 68 right now. Maybe you can throw some of the black plastic mulch out on the dirt for a few days to really warm the soil, then plant, keep warm at night (maybe even just cover with a glass bowl or something at night) and hope for the best ?

My flowering trees are budded almost flowering, my tulips are 1/2 grown and my forsythia has bloomed. We are very warm here and temperate all year round, we are insulated by 2 rivers on either side of a penninsula and then 4 miles from the ocean. My town used to be a garden nursery in the 1800's LOL.

Give it a try - just don't squander all your seeds...

Hi, NE mammas, well, looks like Spring has finally arrived. Got outside and cleaned up all the beds for planting. So, what's everybody planting this year? Can anybody give me some good ideas for a shady area besides hostas? Thanks in advance........Danielle
