Starting To Doubt Myself

I've been following this forum for a long, long time. I'm a bfar mother, and never got very far with my first two. I'm determined to get at least 3 months this time, regardless of how I have to supplement. I have a long list of concerns, the least of which is how my family might contribute to my success or failure. But my biggest fear, and it IS a fear, is that I'll be unable to use the supplementer in public discreetly. Discretion is a very big deal for me, as my reduction is obvious, and the scarring is not delicate or minimal. My scars are visible from across the room, and I'm not interested in broadcasting them.

However, I DO want to nurse my child at all times. It's the only way I'll have any type of success for any amount of time. And the more I hear about how the public so innappropriately deals with their hangups about breasts and breastfeeding, the more intimidated I'm getting. For me it's not about self confidence or even standing my ground in the face of stupidity or ignorance. It's about the emotion that goes along with nursing. I know how over the edge emotional I'm going to be about nursing, and I have 2 older children who I cannot lock in the house with me all day while I figure it out. I can take a short haitus from the real world to get things started, but my toddler needs to go outside and play, and my 6 year old has swim lessons, library activities, etc.

I'm rambling. But really, I would love some advice from mamas who have nip'ed with supplementers. Do you attempt to be discreet, or do you just "whip it out", as they say? How did you adapt the supplementer use to your public nursing? I'm fairly sure I'll be using mine for the long run, so I really need to get my act together!

I've never used a SNS but I've NIP'ed quite a bit and am the type that "whips it out" and i think your best bet for not showing anything off would be wearing a nursing tank and a button up shirt so you could easily get the SNS ready and then nurse however you want.... hth

I've read that layering your clothing helps and someone suggested that you buy cheap tank tops and cut your own holes in them- I thought this was a good idea to show less skin if you're sensitive about that.
Sorry, no advice for the SNS, but I'm sure that will attract attention in itself- just remember, you are educating everyone who sees you nurse and I'm sure you'll get questions, but hopefully they'll be from people who are really interested and care, not from people who are being jerks!

You can do this!! Big hugs!

Where in IL are you?? I'm there too amidst the soy and corn, and have had NO LUCK finding a midwife that I can homebirth with, much less an IBCLC any closer than Indianapolis.

You can do it! Just practice in front of a mirror the first few weeks at home, and make a good system for when you're out... and since it may take a little longer with the SNS and all, look for hunger cues, DO NOT WAIT for crying, cause nothing attracts more negative attention than a screaming baby... so try to focus in on her cues so you'll be able to have it all ready when she's ready. And just RELAX. It'll get easier as time goes by.

good luck and HTH!

I have only minimal experience with a SNS, and it was pretty awkward for me, but I've heard the Lactaid is much easier to use.

I would cross-post this in Breastfeeding Challenges. You will get lots of advice there. Also, there is a great Yahoo group called MOBI (mothers overcoming breastfeeding issues) that I would highly recommend. Lots of real experts there.

You can do it mama!

Practicing in front of a mirror, the process from start to finish, will give you an idea of how it all looks. Have you talked to any LLL Leaders? They may be able to give you some tips, or at least support.

And, good for you for planning in advance! What a lucky baby you have!

No, I've not been to a LLL meeting, or talked to anyone at all. I'm really nervous about being able to nip at all with any sort of confidence.

Would you use something like a Bebe au Lait?

http://www.bebeaulait.com/

They come in beautiful patterns and I know several nursing mothers who NIP using them and love them. Plus they are thin and easy to shove in a bag. This might give you the privacy you need to comfortably use your SNS.
I hope you can make it work, you are doing a wonderful thing!

I nurse everyday with the SNS with my daughter in public. I have developed a lot of tricks for making it easier, but am low on time right now. I'd love to talk more- PM me and I'll get back to you when life settles down.

If anything I've had lots of people ask why I have tape or a tube on my chest, or what the bottle around my neck is for. I use it as a chance to educate- I have chronic low supply and using this supplemental nursing system allows me to provide my baby with as much breastmilk as possible."

Erin bird...you are awesome.

And bdavis, sorry, no tips for you....other than appreciation for what you are doing. It's hard to be different, and it can feel lonely, so I hope you get the support you are wanting, and that you deserve.

It's so strange for me - I am the only ff mom that I know! So *I* am the Odd Man Out at playdates and other social events. I want to nurse my child and just BE. Erinbird, I will PM you, I'd love to hear more about your long term sns use!

You might get even more responses with a more specific thread title, like

"feeling unsure about NIP with SNS"

Ok, thanks. Funny though, it had way more responses in Lactivism than in Challenges!
