Placenta activism needed!!

Wouldn't you think that if you 'birthed' a placenta, it is YOURS to keep (if you want to) and do whatever you want with...I mean you have the baby, and the baby's yours, but the placenta is the hospital's property???

Theres a woman in my town (friend of mine) going through a HUGE ordeal and possible legal action to obtain her placenta back from the hospital.

I don't understand why they're doing this, My youngest dd was also a hospital transfer, and I had no problem taking the placenta home the staff even packaged it up and let me keep it in their fridge. I'm in NC, though.
