I don't remember much of the plot, but I remember being completely drawn in by it, and scared out of my mind. It was a children's historic novel about a boy who lived with his adult sister in a seaside town. I think it involved pirates hiding something in the church basement?...I remember the boy hiding in a basement or masoleum with corpses? I think one of the characters was a cemetary keeper who always talked about drinking to keep the cold off. Maybe there was something about a storm and a boat coming in on the cliffs?

Argh, my memories of this book are all jumbled! Is this ringing a bell for anyone? I would guess it was sold through Scholastic in the late 80's because that's where my parents bought almost all of my books.
