Arm pit stains: deodorant fused to fabric??

DH has this weird stain in the armpit area of a lot of his shirts, as if the deodorant has fused to the fabric and stiffened it. He stopped using solids and has beeen using spray on for awhile but that hasn't helped.

Does anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this and how to fix it?
Thanks,
~Cath

vinegar is what I used to use on my dress shirts. put it directly on the yellowing stiffness, and wash as normal.

I did try vinegar once, but just in the wash itself, not directly on the residue. Do you let it soak in for awhile? If so, for how long?
Thanks, ~Cath

For my vintage clothing that comes with deoderant residue or pit stains, I use vinegar.

I first gently rub the fabric to see if it will come out, then move up to a soft brush if needed.

I put the vinegar directly onto the stain as if it were a stain remover (which it is).
