Recommend a movie.

This may not work but I'll give it a try anyway

I'd like to have a thread for people to recommend movies to others, perhaps a slightly obscure film or for people to ask what to watch in a particular genre, or if they've seen a movie with a an actor and would like to watch some other moviews starring that person.

My question is about Gosford Park, has anyone seen this?

I have it on Dvd and I can't seem to get past the first 20 minutes is it worth sticking with?

I watched Gosford Park so long ago, I barely remember what it was about. It is good, and worth sticking to if you like British dark comedy/period drama. But as it is not an entirely memorable film to me, if your time is precious to you, you may want to skip it!

Old Joy

Okay, I'm game!

Dh and I just saw a great movie yesterday called "Old Joy", playing at the local arthouse cinema. It was filmed here in Oregon, and is a subtle and beautiful film with amazing acting. It is so naturalistically filmed.

And afterwards, dh and I were both so relaxed like we had just come back from a trip to the mountains in the coastal range!

I recommend it!

Check out Imaginary Heroes it is an awesome movie

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. It's so well done and so far everyone I've recommended it to has never heard of it. Robert Downey Jr., Chazz Palminteri, Shia LaBeouf, Rosario Dawson and Dianne Wiest are all in it.

The IMDB site is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473488/

Gosford Park is so not worth sticking with.

Oh, and another one that's done really well but it's not as easy watch is SherryBaby. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a young mom out of prison trying to take on staying straight and raising her daughter.

I've never been able to stick it out through Gosford Park either. That's a pretty significant sign to me cause I have been known to stick it out through even the worst of movies.

"Ushpizin." It's in Hebrew with English subtitles.

It's a very sweet story, and the best thing (IMO) about it is it's the only movie about Orthodox Jews that was written by (and stars) Orthodox Jews, Khasidim from Jerusalem.

The director is entirely secular, as were most of the crew.

The only other movies about religious Jews are entirely written, directed, and acted by people who are not. If you've *ever* seen a khasid in a movie, they've been someone entirely in costume ... with a wig for the sidecurls, etc. And were written by outsiders.

Until "Ushpizin."

One of those windows-to-another-world movies that you may not be familiar with. (Though am personally quite at home there myself. )

No one seems to remember this one, but if you like visually stunning movies or creepy horror, try Kwaidan. It's a Japanese movie from the late '60s, an anthology film that tells four stories from folklorist Lafcadio Hearn. All the segments are good, but the central one, Zatoichi the Earless, is stunning -- a hapless blind musician is pestered by the ghosts of a noble and his entourage, who died tragically in a great sea battle. The ghosts take him away night after night to a graveyard to sing the epic ballad about the battle, until the head monk of the monastery where Zatoichi lives steps in with a novel solution to protect him. The solution SHOULD work, but the monk has forgotten a crucial detail ...

It's one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

a relatively recent, somewhat obscure, wonderful, lovely movie.

I second this recommendation. Hard to watch but excellently acted. I also highly, highly recommend "You and Me and Everyone We Know". This is a lighter movie. Makes you feel good but not stupid at all movie about life.

I also enjoyed Station Agent. I usually only watch documentaries but recently I have been watching naratives as well.

One that I really enjoyed was Dorian Blues

ooh, just remembered a great documentary.

thin by HBO. about a treatment center of eating disorders.

I have the first disc of the documentary addiction I hope it is as good.

Indie films I saw recently and liked:

Half Nelson (thought Ryan Gosling was so powerful in it)
Hustle and Flow
Little CHildren (with Kate Winslet who was wondeful as always)
Happy Ending (I really loved this one)
Pieces of April

I liked Sherrybaby too....quality but yes, hard to watch. Maggie Gyllenhaal is so great

I will have to check out the recommendations. I have The Secret Life of Words for tonight....looks really good but I'd never heard of it before I saw it.
