This is exactly my approach as well. Always has been.

Oh, jeez. DS with his hard-core punk Papa had heard just about all the worst songs that I can imagine. Butthole Surfers, Iron Maiden, Dead Kennedys, The Misfits, etc... including many, many that I would be embarrassed to name.
But what can I do? it's his Pop. And he seems to be turning out fine, even if his thinks the lyrics to that old melody go: "It's just an old f***ing love song, coming down in three-part harmony..."
I definitely think actions are way more important than words. No words are off limits in our house, but mean behaviour is never accepted. And while ds is definitely pretty radical, he is very sweet, helpful, honest and pleasant. And that's what is important to me.

I agree with the talking bit, although I let ds bring it up, in case he didn't understand in the first place. He usually says something like , "Oh that's really awful, huh, mamma?" or "oh, that sounds like a bad idea! I would never do that!"

Okay - have to say that in 24 years of being a Maiden fan, that's the first time I've ever seen them listed as a hard-core punk band. Wow.

I'd tend to agree to with that...ds1 used to sing "G*d D****d Devil" when he was little...doesn't seem to have hurt him any. He's a really great kid.

I haven't read through the all the posts yet, but I just wanted to add that music is probably the last thing to worry about. I've been doing research into violent play/violent TV, video games, etc... (and how to avoid/prevent it!)

Apparently, music seems to have little/no effect on teen behavior... I know that this doesn't exactly translate to small children, but I think that your mind is still free to imagine what is going on in the song--we still do a lot of the work...

But images are much harder to get out of your head once they are there...

On Top of Old Smokey has horrible lyrics if you actually listen to them.

My 3 yo's new favorite band of Of Montreal.
