? about rash on DS's lower lip

I'm trying to decide if DS's lower lip problem is an allergy. His lower lip and the skin immeidately under it are very often (more of the time than not) all red, chapped and cracked. He has been diagnosed with milk and egg food allergies and as soon as we swtiched him to soy milk his sore littel red cheeks improved immediately. That was almost a year and a hald ago. He still gets some red patchs behind his legs from time to time when he eats the rare but occaisionly piece of cheese. But as for his lip.. It's only the lower lip and never the upper. It itches him and I think maybe it's from tomato. Not sure if it's just fresh or both fresh and cooked but I have not given them to him for a few days and it seems to be much improved. He also has a just one finger on his right hand that also is red and itchy all the time.

Have any of you ever had this kind of lip only reaction to foods? If so what ones and have you been able to do anything about it other than not let them eat it. He loves grape tomatoes. Goes to the frigs and picks them out from a whole host of options.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

My oldest daughter wasn't able to tolerate milk until she was 15 months old, and then-after her stomach was able to tolerate it, she would still break out in a rash around her mouth after drinking in. We were told to then limit her exposure to milk for awhile once again, and it eventually went away by the time she was 2.
My youngest (who has soy, dairy and gluten intolerances) has been breaking out in a rash around her mouth and we still haven't figured out the food causing it yet....it's so frustrating.
My MIL breaks out around her mouth after eating shellfish...and her mouth gets all tingling. You could try and eliminate tomatoes for awhile and see if his face clears up. My fear is always that with continued exposure, the reaction will increase.

Thanks Julie for the info. It's terribly frustrating like you said. I too worry about the continued exposure and possible reaction. His lip is currently pretty well healed up except for one small patch on one corner which is a first in quite a while. In the mean time, he now has other things going on. He has developed cracks and red patched around the backs of his ears and they must itch too because he digs at them. He still scratches at his head all the time (especially in the evening and while falling asleep). I'm going to keep him away from the tomatoes for a another week yet and then give him a little to see if I see a response. I sure hope he can have cooked tomatoes because he just loves catsup.

Anyone else?

When I was a kid I was senstive to uncooked milk and I got a red, itchy, swollen lower lip. My lips are chapped a lot, have been for years and years. Someone finally suggested that maybe I was allergic to lanolin or other things in the chap stick. Although I still have chapped lips (we live in a very dry climate) it's much better since just putting Cetaphil lotion on my lips instead of traditional chapsticks.

Thanks USAmma. I too am sensitive to lanolin and so is DS. I forgot o mention that. Cetaphil is what I use to lotion him up after bath and is what we put on his lip. I also have put the California baby Calendula (sp?) ointment on his lip.

I wonder if there is any problem with him licking his lips and possibly injesting a tiny amount of either of those. I don't think he likes the taste of either too much.

thanks again!
