CONSTANT nursing!?

My little guy (4 weeks Thursday) has not gone more than 45 minutes all day between nursing sessions. He doesn't seem to be getting the 'drunk' look that I guess means he got lots of hindmilk and he just wants more more more. He goes for anywhere from 5-20 minutes before taking a break. Sucking on something else doesn't cut it either. He went 5 hours last night without eating, which has never happened before (the longest had been 3 hours), maybe that has something to do with it. Tell me this is normal/okay? Also, he went a stretch of about 4 hours this morning without a wet diaper but the flow has picked up now.
Another thing too, my milk looks much more white and thick than it ever has.

My guy is like that sometimes. He cluster feeds at night, which is a pain sometimes, but he's been sleeping longer stretches at night, so I can't complain. He slep 6 hours the other night. Hang in there!

Sounds normal and like a nice trade off for getting five hours of sleep at night!

DD did the same thing at about 4 weeks. She is 5 weeks now and sleeping longer and nursing longer.

Sounds just like my little man. He cries all the time and roots, even if he was just on the breast an hour before. He isn't quite 3 weeks yet. Haven't figured out if it's colic, something I'm eating, or a growth spurt, but it is so frustrating for us new parents.

sounds like a growth spurt to me... I wouldn't worry unless it keeps up for longer than 4 or 5 days... best thing to do if it is a growth spurt is to let him nurse as long and often as he wants, he's working on increasing your milk supply to keep up with his growing needs.

Normal. Probably a growth spurt and he's filling up so he can sleep those 5 hours.

Ditto everyone else!
I think Ethan has been having one long growth spurt since birth, though because he rarely goes an hour without nursing. He also sleeps 4-5 hrs at night, though. He is a complete nurse-a-holic, though. He won't take a pacifier and likes to comforted.... A LOT.

Definitely a growth spurt! We have a lot more coming up in the first year!

I wish I had an endless supply of milk...

I'm currently feeding a newborn and a toddler:

Agreeing that he is probably just growing! Just make the most of nursing sessions (try to get him to eat as much as possible and fill him up completely).

Just adding my yep, yep, yep here. DD is 5 weeks today and has been cluster-feeding in the evenings now for about 10 days. Lucikly, it means she's sleeping longer at night. We've had two nights now that she's gone 6 hours! Yippee!!

Congrats!

Oh how I want 6 hours of sleep (in a row)! We're finally stretching to 4 hours so I guess I should be thankful that in eight hours of the night we only got up once . . .

I actually from the June DDC, but thought I'd just say that, yes, this is probably a growth spurt. It sounds just like one. In the LLL "Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" it points out that there are several major, noticeable growth spurts at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3months, and 6 months. With each of my previous four babies, I found this to be pretty much spot on, give or take a week. Don't worry, the baby is just kicking up your milk supply to be able to meet its needs as it gets bigger. It only usually lasts 3 days to a week. Then you'll find a more sane rhythm again.

We went through the very same thing at 4.5 weeks (last monday and tuesday. I swear she was attached to the breast for 40 minutes of every hour, and woke every hour at night. On Thursday when she went back to normal my breasts felt much fuller between feedings and I was pretty engorged when she did her customary 4 hour stretch at night. I say chalk it up to a growth spurt and baby working to increase your supply and don't plan to accomplish much for a couple of days. This too shall pass.
