I really want (honest) opinions on this name.. love it, hate it, think we are crazy etc (I will SO not be offended, swear!) of the folks I have asked (nobody close or in family! names vaulted to them) we have gotten wildly mixed opinions (either love or hate..)

Dean James (last name Peetros : PEA-trose long "O") it's greek...

potential NN DJ but my oldest (16 yr old) is Jay and our 6 yr old calls him JJ (his last name is Joseph) nobody else calls him JJ only Evan, is it bad to have a Jay and a DJ (if we chose the NN) ? does it sound stupid?

in general how do you like the name? (it is somewhat of a greek name ) I am English and Austrian (for the record)

OH and my Dad's MN is James
THAAAAAANKS

My brother's name is Dean, so I have a lot of personal associations with the name. I like it, but don't love it. I can tell you that my brother got called Deanie a lot when he was younger and hated that.

I do like the fact that Dean is a name everyone knows but is not that popular.

I'm not personally wild about two single syllable names together just from the way it sounds (not these two particular names but any two single syllable names).

In terms of the names DJ and JJ (or Jay), that's something that could be a bit confusing for some people, but no more so than families with a Jr and a Sr (or mine where I got named after my father Edward and all my friends called me Ed or Eddi and my dad's relatives call him Ed or Eddy, so phone calls were very confusing).

I'm trying to think of some alternatives but coming up blank.

If you love it, I say go for it.

I don't think the DJ / JJ thing would bother me since it's only one person.

I like the name Dean, but I don't like it with James. Part of it is the 2 single-syllable names together, but most of it is because of the late James Dean (actor). But if you don't think you'll actually call him Dean James, and it will be just his middle name and you'll call him Dean or DJ, then that's probably not as much of a big deal.

This is why we never tell ANYONE the baby's name until after the birth! People are quick to give negative opinions when you tell them prenatally...but, really, who's going to say "yuck" after you've already named your child! :

If you and your dh love it, then use it. Luckily, you still have plenty of time to decide! Good luck!

I tell names but agree with this to the fullest....no one really liked the name Elena but they love it now....I say who cares!

noooo, I WANTED, "negative" opinions.. that was the point! I wanted to really really know what people thought.. much appreciated!! I DID think of the James Dean thing... my friend named her son Jake Daniel and never even THOUGHT of the whole whiskey connection until someone said it to her when he was , like, three months old!! she WISHED someone had said it B4 B/C not she doesn't like it together and wishes she had gotten honest feedback.. ditto for my patient who has a husband named Dick Johnson and they named their son Peter Johnson !! (can you cram anymore alternative penis names in there??) sooooooo dish it out, ladies!!! I want to hear it ALL

The name is okay to me. I don't have strong feelings either way. I personally wouldn't like to have a DJ and a Jay in the house/family though. I think if I went with that name, I would call him Dean.

OK if you WANTED negative opinions then my $0.02 are that I think of James Dean and its too close and that the Jay/DJ thing would bug me.....but I STILL say who cares if you love it.... I DO like Dean just not with James.

In elementary school I had a crush on a guy named Dean so I like that name. I just think the Dean James will be annoying to you because people will ask about a James Dean connection. Just my opinion.
I have no love it nor hate it reactions at all when I hear it. Though I do also think of James Dean. Of course, my own grandfather is named James Dean.

But it seems no matter WHAT you do, people will come up with something. I named my youngest Jackson and people have said SO many times, "So, it's like Michael Jackson?"

Nooooo. His name is JACKSON. Did you hear me mention Michael? Kind of makes me wish I hadn't given him the long version since I like Jack better and that's what I call him.

We have mandatory volunteering twice per month in our school and you wouldn't believe how many kids in his Kindergarten reprimand or correct me for calling him Jack. They tell me his name is JackSON. He tried that for a couple of years but I told him when I birthed him it became my right to choose what name I wanted to call him, and whether that was Jack or Boogar Bean, it was my right. He can't argue with that.

what about Dean Russell ? (my dad is Russell James)

or Dean Bailey (Bailey is my maiden name and I have kept it, Evan's MN is Bailey for family connection continuity although does not flow well off the tongue.. but did not want to hyphenate)
I like Dean Russell.
I really like Dean Russell.....I like Russell NN Russ as a first name too.....Dean Russell is great....

I'm dying here... You are all hilarious.

I really like Dean Russell, as well. Much better than Dean James. And, it's less likely to be shortened to "DR." Although, he could develop a nickname of "doc!"

Bailey makes me think of "Party of Five."
I also think James Dean... but that's not too terrible! I think I like Dean James. Not a big fan of DJ, it seems kind of girlie to me.
I like Dean Russell better. The 2 one syllable names-- "Dean James"-- just sounds awkward to me.
The name Dean reminds me of the character Dean in Gilmore Girls, who drives me NUTS! Does anyone else watch that? :

I do think Dean Russell and Dean Bailey have nice flows, though. (I like the maiden name as a middle name!)

I personally like the name Dean as a first name. Its one of those names that can fit a small child and a grown adult.
